so I have my turbo off my series 60 14.0 liter because it's leaking oil.
Needless to say I have to replace it to get back up and running.
I have the capability of running either or.
The problem is if I go with a standard non Vgt turbo I will loose a ton off jake brake hold back.
Now the standard turbo is way cheaper and way more efficient and a better choice for running down the road.
But in the end I need that jake brake hold back so I'm leaning towards the Vgt unit.
Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

if you replace vgt to to non vgt on 14l series 60 2-3 fault codes will pop up. vgt is controlled by vpod.

This is true but I have the capability to program out the Vgt files if I went with a standard unit.

Just get a 171702 borg . You will still see 20-24 psi on the jake with that turbo.

You will loose some jake performance at lower rpm as the vgt closes the vanes to keep boost high.

No matter how you program your .cal file with DDCT 4.5, with the standart turbo you will have TURBO LAG. The VPOD is not used anymore, you can remove it.

DDEC-V has 1 vpod (Turbo, EGR is ran by Oil), DDEC-IV has 2 (1 for EGR, 1 for Turbo)

This is true but my main number one question is :
Is there a substantial loss of jake brake performance when using the standard turbo over the Vgt turbo?

    I just told you.

A friend has same engine and put a 171702 on it. He lost low rpm jake performance for sure. But if you bring rpm up to 1900 it has about the same hold back as the vgt.

    Fair enough.
Nothing wrong with a second opinion.

Fact is when a guy gives a honest answer with real world, first hand experience that relates exactly to the guys question, one would expect to get a response of some sort or at least a thankyou.
Being as i got nither i just assumed maybe you just skipped over my response or just didnt see it.
Im guessing now its more like my response it just not the one you wanted to hear.

I hope you get the answer your looking for sir.

    Thank you
for the record I undid the air line to the Vgt turbo this morning and drove it with an empty trailer and the vanes in the turbo wide open an it renders the jake brake a noisy useless piece of equipment.
So I guess I answered my own question.
Can't imagine how bad it would be with a load on.
Maybe more rpm would help but I don't run mine north of 1800 rpm
