Saw the ENT Doc the other day. He says tonsillectomy. 10 days of recovery at least. Thing is I just finished school 3 weeks ago so add another 2 weeks or so and were looking at around 6 weeks since school. I have a pre hire with a flatbed company but not sure if they will be ok with taking weeks to set up a start date. Will companies give a hard time about being out of school so long? Anyone else have a tonsillectomy as an adult? Have any advise? Thanks.

It will hurt like hell. Don't take all your liquid pain at once. Take 1/2 dose then two hours later do other 1/2. It will coat your throat and keep pain to minimum. They will wait I'm sure, just call them and tell them your deal.

Yeah. Twice.. first time I was 6 yrs old. They ripped them out... tonsils grew back.
Had them put again in my 30's. cut out neatly. Much less painful.
Follow docs orders religiously.
If the company wants you, they shouldnt have a problem waiting.
You could put in a few more apps to be on the safe side.
Good luck.4wayflashers Thanks this. -

Yeah The more I read the worse it got but I'm not reading any more. People say the pain gets to be a 10/10 after a few days hahaha. But I figure I would be better off getting this done now than having problems once I'm working and driving OTR.

It's slow to heal, that's why the lengthy convalescence. There may be alternatives to surgery, but you would need to ask for other opinions to find them and it may involve traveling.
Good luck with it.4wayflashers Thanks this. -
Maybe I am wrong but I dont remember it that way. I had mine taken out in '99 (depending on the month, I was either 39 or 40). I had them out one day, stayed over night, ate all the Popsicle's & ice cream etc I wanted & was released the next day. I was off work the rest of the week.
About 10 years before, my ex-wife had her's out (she was about 30) & was down for two weeks. When the doc told me a few days, I thought he was mistaken. However, he was right. It was like 4 or 5 days for me.
But I guess everyone is different with different situations, dr's & procedures.
Good luck. Mine wasnt bad at all. Be prepared though. They dont sew up the holes they make. They just heal up on their own. I thought that was real strange since it is inside your mouth. However, everything has been fine with no problems at all.4wayflashers Thanks this. -
I had mines out at 25 (im 37 now)...... very long and scary story... but i'll try and keep it short: do what you can to suppress any urge to "cough" for the 1st week after surgery...... couple of days after surgery i happen to cough once in my sleep and totally removed the "scab" that was trying to form where the incision took place: wound up drinking my own blood (it was running down the back of my throat) for a little while till i realized it wasnt going to stop, and i better go to the hospital..........(wound up being admitted for 2 days- but im the "exception" and not the rule)
anyway- the doctor explained to me that tonsillectomies as an adult raise the chances of "bleeding" to about 4-5%..... i just happen to fall in the 4-5% lol
You WILL be in some pain for a week or so.... but knowing I didnt have to put up with sore throats, or HORRENDOUS breath anymore (from the puss granules inside the tonsil that would pop out on occassion) made my pain bearable!
its a pretty quick surgery, when you wake up, ya might feel a little woozy... but just know that your "new" sore throat , will be your last!

I doubt it will be an issue. I'm not positive but I think most want you to start within 3 months. This is excusable and not that you are painting a picture of a procrastinator.
You can always put it off until you are eligible for the FMLA in 12 months? Then you can cash in on vacation pay and guaranteed a return to work.
I wish I had mine removed. I think it plays a role in my sleep apnea which can be an issue in trucking.4wayflashers Thanks this. -
Tonsil ablation is one of the many alternatives to cpap that are mentioned for treating apnea. They are doing some amazing things with alternative treatments now.
