So I always wondered what on earth do truckers do when they need to drive under a bridge or overpass that doesn't allow for enough room for them?

Peel off their roof.

Pretty simple...if you can't go under / through it, you gotta go around it.
-

ooooooh
ok what happens if you don't realize it's coming and you get there and oh #*#^ it's too small!? -
You look to see if it reads swift on your door....
-
Well, ideally you should have checked for low clearances on your route before you started out on your trip. In the front of your atlas there's a section for low clearances and restricted routes for each state.
Also, you should be looking at the clearances at each bridge you go under....if there's no sign, turn on the 4-ways and use your best judgement. If it looks too low, get out and check it. Are people gonna be upset/honking/flipping you off? Yepper. Are you gonna rip the top off your trailer? Nope. -
Yep!

-
In the New York metro region stay off of any road/highway that says "parkway".The clearances are low,way low.Truck access is restricted.Fines are high.

I'm passing this along to Kavorka, this is something he may find very helpful!!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh that makes sense! Didn't know they had this available.
Wow everyone is so helpful!!

Coming from the viewpoint of someone who wouldn't know a Swift from a Smith why all the harping on Swift drivers around here? They can't all be that bad......right?
(I've got sooooooooooooo much to learn!)

Dang severl people beat me to it. If you are a Swift driver you just go a head and try to go under it. Everyone else just goes around.
