    This is a misconception.
Trucking is not exempt from the FLSA.
It is only exempt from the overtime provisions of the FLSA...meaning the carriers are not obligated to pay you overtime after 8/40 hours.
But they must pay you at least the federal minimum wage for all hours worked.
It is a moot point, tho since drivers hide all their waiting/delays in lines 1 and 2.

It is, but you will never get it through to this bunch.
I've even heard guys arguing why should they get paid for sitting and doing nothing?
All they want is more miles.
Your best bet is to stay far away from the irregular-route OTR companies...too many morons willing to sit around/wait for $0.00 and be happy about it.

I really doubt that. You also gotta look at it as if you go to college to maybe get a decent job, no ones paying you to do that. You can make a little =money right away vs. a few yrs in college. Most of the guys on here are people who spend their whole career at starter companies. Some of the guys figured it out and went elsewhere or bought their own truck. The only way to make money is put in your time, then leave the rookie companies.

I am going to go back to the title of this post. I originally asked for help with finding good trucking companies to work for. Somehow this has gotten all off of track.

Can anyone tell me good trucking companies to work for starting out?

Also, does anyone know anything about the book by Aubrey "Allen" Smith on How to make 65-90k a year trucking?

    Research, research, research.....

Look man, I will put it this way.... Unless you pay your way into Trucking School. You will have to go with a OTR, Driving Mills company.
I have been looking into this alot. I will be going to a Mill very soon. I do not have the cash to pay up front for Trucking School. The places that pay for your school are paying alot of Money to get you through that school. So YES they want a 1 year Min contract signed to get the money back they spent on YOU. So it is FAIR. Anywhere you go, even if you pay for your own school you will have to put up with Low cents pr mile, and a bunch of crap your 1st year out no matter what. It is what it is. After that one year you are golden. You can goto the mom n pop trucking places that pay good money, and have the nice trucks. If you have your own truck you can make over $100,000 pr year and more. I know this my step father is a trucker. He owns his own truck. Now you will have to suck it up, and deal with it for the 1st year like I will be doing, or just dont get into this job. Do research, if you are going to a Mill like me there is Prime, USA Truck/P.A.M/Driver Solutions. Swift, Stevens, Werner, and a few more. look into it and pick one. You will just have to deal with it for the year. Then move on.:biggrin_25516:

the only way to make that much money is to own your own truck, have experience, and be willing to stay out OTR for 6-9 months at a time. The guys that make that much have their own truck set up with everything they need to live comfortably for a year at a time on the road. you have seen them- 20 foot sleepers, satellite, showers in the truck, kitchens, generators etc.

I have friends in the business and they have made a lot of good suggestions. If I go to the tech school and get my training I may go buy my own truck (used of course to begin) and just be a strait up O/O. There is freight out there to haul and they can turn me on to it. A lot of flat bed stuff but hey, I am good with that.

I am used to making a certain amount annually so it would be foolish to take a massive cut in pay no matter how much I would like to drive. If I can't make money at it what is the point. I really do love to drive but not going to do it for chump change.

If you stay driving even with the Mill School you should make close to 40K your first year. That is pretty good money to most. You will not get 70K your first year maybe even with your own truck. Your own truck means you buy your own fuel, and fix it if it breaks down. That will cost some cash jack. So you will only be ending up with the 40K anyways to spend. But if you have the money to goto tech, and get your CDL's, buy your own truck. Then go for it!. Your first year out still will not be what you think.....:mmad:

You just have to be business smart. Make good decisions. If one can do that then you should make good money.

I am not looking to get rich but I am looking to add 10-20k annually to what I currently make. Not looking to go backwards.

Research, research, research......can't stress it enough.
