I'm currently enrolled in a trucking course at a local college, If I can recall correctly there are two folks nearing 60, two other fellows that are above 55 and only about 2 of us in our twenties. I'd say you're good to go old timer, You're only as old as you allow and I've even got my dear old pa thinking of getting his CDL now, and he'll be 60 come this November.

I am a new guy here. No I am not working yet because I am waiting on my hard license. I tested for the endorsements one week after I passed at the DMV and was issued a temporary CDL. I wanted to make sure I had the license, then added the endorsements. My instructor advised me to hold off on the hard license until after I took the endorsement tests in order to save $30. I was issued an interim CDL A after my DMV tests. After acing the endorsement tests they took the interim and issued me a temporary license with the doubles/triples and tanker endorsements, but I am in the process of waiting for TSA to complete their investigation before I am granted a HazMat endorsement. I am expecting my hard license soon. Then I will begin training with a trucking company.

I am 56 years old, and was a journeyman in a Teamster trade for well over 20 years when my job was outsourced, eliminating my position. I went through the WIA program at a local One Stop, and my transitional training was paid for by the government. I will not recommend any particular school, but as others have said, I do not recommend a company school. I think it is best to have freedom to choose -- as much as possible as a new driver -- who we will work for.

Good luck in your journey, and I wish you all the best.

I'm 59 and in good health and still on the fence about getting into trucking. There is a community college truck driving program in my area and it starts class soon. The only problem I see that 59 years old will anyone hire me i would like to work till i'm 65.

    Thanks

I am 41 and one of the youngest owner/op in my company. There is a driver shortage, so yes they will hire you quickly. However, the companies that will hire students don't pay well and you will have to jump to a better paying company once you have your 2 years experience. There will be a younger crowd at the trucking mills I speak of, but out here, you will be slightly higher than the median driver age.
