    Hi folks .
New to the forum and and a new driver at that . I am currently enrolled in Mid Florida Tech truck driving school til the 23 of January . Just before break we received our licenses after testing out and were giving a list of jobs to look into . To make a long story short I work for a warehouse that primarily supplies the Disney cruise ships and among other things conventions and hotel remodel . After showing a desire to obtain a class A they offered me a job to drive with them it would be local and occasionally Miami Tampa and Jacksonville with a Box truck or Tractor/Trailer . But after talking to some of the drivers that have been with my company for some time driving they keep telling me that i am selling myself short by not going OTR first before becoming local . They tell me Miami and 53' trailers do not mix well haha . But beyond that any input on this would be great !

Well, if you're single with no kids, try OTR for a while. The only thing that tends to suck about OTR is being gone from family. I went to Miami a few times it wasn't bad cept that I went through a school zone at 3pm the first time.

I'm sure others with local experience will chime in

Their trying to tell you to get some experience before you drag a 53 foot trailer in the big cities. It's for your and the company's own protection.

Do as you wish...but do you know the pay scale and benefits package that Disney offers those guys.....find out 1st....OTR is different to say the least and not always for everybody. Local work can be challenging...but , once you've seen that the type of backing and turning skills you'll learn locally offer you a better frame of experience to take into OTR , if you decide to go that route. any professional driving job has it pro's and con's....BUT , If they offer you a job take it...learn the ropes and still be home...if you see that local isn't your thing , stick it out for a year or so , get some experience and move into OTR....

OK, it appears that you already work for the company, and they are willing to kick you up to a driving job. You have some thinking to do here. If you like the company, if they are good to work for, if the salary and benes are reasonable, it seems to me like you should stay with them.

If the biggest negative you have, is a driver, or a few drivers telling you to bail out, you might want to ask yourself why they would say that. Are they unhappy with the company? If they are, whose fault is it? You are always going to find a few folks who can do nothing but spew crap about the company they work for. Do they have an agenda? Or are they just idiots? Only you can make the decision, but look real hard at why someone is telling you to get out.

If you survive the first two months you will survive.

Maybe put big signs on the back of the truck, "Student Driver Stay At Least 1000 Feet Away"... "Not Responsible for Landscaping".... "Please Step Back From the Curb"! :biggrin_25520:

One really great indicator of a job is longevity......if the guys telling you its not any good have more than 5 years with the company then .....well they need to be asked "why" are they still there. Drivers don't typically stay on a job for 5 years or longer for any old reason....just saying , look before you leap away from a job that you could very well retire from...one things for certain...the Disney company is gonna be around for a while , and since you've already been offered employment...don't look a gift horse in the mouth...just an
"old farts" take on it though....Good Luck!

Those drivers aren't kidding when they say Miami and 53 ft trls don't mix.Deffinately not a truck friendly city.If you was to start driving for this company who would train you and for how long? You're not going to learn everything and much from that school. which is why starter companies have 6 to 8 weeks with a trainer.
