So a friend of mine works for one of the megas. He picked up a loaded trailer, that just came out the shop and passed the annual inspection. He was headed from johnstown,ny to buffalo, ny area.
About 50 miles down the road as he was approaching syracuse three wheels came loose from that trailer on i-90 west. It was later at night no one was hurt just plenty of sparks...
Safety guy came in, truck/trailer was towed, he was sent home unpaid for a week at first. And then terminated for failure to do a proper pre-trip.
Do you guys touch them wheel nuts during pre-trip?
I usually just look at them.
Wonder if they would look any different if shop people did'nt tightned them up
Touching lugnuts at pre-trip

Of course it's always the drivers fault.

I'll look at them, but chances are, if that shows up later, you will feel it first..then I'll DEFINITELY pull over to investigate.
Russian Thanks this. -
If you was doing a pretrip for a DMV they want you to touch everything.Once in a while I'd touch all the lugnuts as I'm inspecting the tires. Its too bad your friend got fired, more then one person is to blame. But that's how the industry is always the drivers fault no matter what.

Same here in Canada, you must physically touch the lugnuts. My dad used to thump his tires with a big tire iron, and he would lean on 1 or 2 nuts, to see how tight they were. He never had a tire come off a trailer, but he refused a few trailers after got he got some turn on 1 nut, upon re-torque, they were all loose.
I also carry a tire iron over a hammer for tires, and will be doing the same.
Off Topic, how's Heyl going @pattyj ? -
THREE wheels??? So somebody had a HD 1 inch impact wrench and loosened all nuts on 2 wheel sets? Yes. Maybe a decent visual inspection should have caught that, but I'd be more interested in finding the location this took place, and the SOB who perpetrated this vandalism. This level of vandalism borders on attempted manslaughter by proxy.
I'm going to assume this might have more accurately been a complete screw up by some shop tire guy(s) who failed to complete the job at a local terminal shop before the trailer was returned to the yard???Ooops Thanks this. -
I quit Heyl long ago.I was local and getting paid by the mile which was roughly 300 miles a day.I talked to many there about getting paid more at least detention but they wouldn't do it.

But I'm glad this thread was not about what I was afraid it was about based on the title.

I thought the same thing. But I'm pretty sure a mod would have already closed it.

Alright, I guess I need educating here, but can someone tell me what good it does to touch the lugnuts? Are you giving each one a twist to see if it's loose? Or just running your hand across them?
tscottme Thanks this.
