I have a meeting tommorow morning with the WIA office on "possibly" obtaining some assistance to attend a CDL school, but was already told that the chances are unlikely due to available funds for CDL school. For companies that I've called before applying.....
Stevens - "Doesn't hire out of Illinois". Reason "not enough freight coming out of Illinois".
Millis - "Need your CDL A if in Illinois"
Central Refridgerated - "Illinois law requires actual CDL A first", eventhough Swift only requires the A permit???....
Watkins Sheppard - "Doesn't hire out of Illinois"
USA Truck - Hiring area completely shaded around Illinois, wow.
P.A.M - Illinois not in hiring area on the map.
Swift - "No training classes until atleast Feb." Possibility.
ROEHL - Didnt respond, will callback.
PRIME - A recruiter said "yes" they do hire out of Ilinois, Put me through to another recruiter who had my app, in which I left a vmail. No callback.
Multiple recruiters have told me that Illinois is just "one of those states" so I guess it is what it is. I just never knew it'd be that difficult. I never worry, only pray and things always work out
On a sidenote, the person at the WIA office added that it would "slightly" help my chances if I could present atleast 3 prehire letters before filling out he paperwork, I wanted to laugh. She said the problem has been with companies letting go too many drivers after getting their CDL, for MVR's, etc....in short, no company I spoke with except Swift was willing to do such. 2 recruiters even chuckled.
See you guys on the road eventually!
Tough in Illinois......Career setbacks.

not enough frieght coming out of chicago?
thats crazy -
I wish you the best of luck.
I'm just a State east of you and I'm having a heck of a time with the WIA program.
Spent over a month calling, leaving voice-mail, leaving e-mail and basically stalking the office trying to get information out of WorkOne about it.
Turns out that that my district no longer will provide any funding for CDL training. Turns out they were sending too many people with DUIs poor MVR's etc to this training and lo and behold these new CDL holders couldn't get a job. So the managers decided to suspend all funding for that type of program. It is pretty sharp of your employment office to require the pre-hires even though from reading here they are not worth much since most places don't do a true background check til you are in their office.
So now I'm playing phone tag with other districts begging to be considered if they have any funding left. Being the end of the year, funding is pretty low and they will not be able to fund the whole cost even if they can squeeze me in the program. I'm hoping if they can maybe cover 2/3rds I might be able to make this work. Otherwise I'll be looking at under-the-barrel companies to try to get something going. And with Jan-Feb being a traditionally slow season I might not even get that.
Again, good luck with your meeting tomorrow.18wheelsofsteel Thanks this. -
good luck, i know in illinois with the wia program does background checks and driving record check to see if you qualify for the grant before they will give it to you

I hope u have better luck with wia than I did. Last spring I was a day from starting class an they called an said all funding had been cut.

Thanks alot for all the good luck, "unfortunately" there isn't any available funds until July! I was told that it differs with each office, so in short I'm checking with others but it looks like company paid training in Feb it is. Regardless, excited to hit the road.

@Mgfg, seriously......She wasn't even a recruiter, just someone who answered the phone and looked up my application. Worst part was, this was after a recruiter (who had all my info and background) told me to personally fax him my application so he could "expedite" things. I did so last July, didn't hear anything for 2 weeks, decided to call my recruiter (who of course emailed me saying to contact Stevens) and was given that exact excuse.
