Trailer axle overweight--Going to CA

I've pretty much been a flatbedder and they asked me to take a van to Cali. I spent 50 minutes getting the weights right and didn't know about 40' until a bunch of lights turned red and they come out immediately with 100 foot tape measures. Lol

 

Ditto this ^^^ Boy. How do some of these guys make any money in this business? ("Refuse load" ... "take it back" .... blah blah blah). I'd feel better at 41 foot than 600 over. Or split the difference. California is not the big bad boogy men some here would have you believe. I've ran with numbers much worse. Some times you gotta take your chances and hope it works out better next time.

At the very least, run it at 42 foot until you get to california to keep the other states from looking too close at you.

 

I hope you continue to progress. If what I've researched is correct, there are no csa points for overweight overlength violations on an inspection report which is what I got. I didn't get a ticket just told to park until it's the right weight.

I have seen them (ca) tape measure a kingpin at 40'1" on roadside and ticket a driver.

Somewhat unrelated, where I work now a couple of drivers were stopped ticked and put OOS for driving a doubles combination 68'1" where 68" is maximum in my state. Thats right, if a weight cop wants to make an issue out something they can. It is best to not give them that opportunity.

 

They have a ruler on the side of the scale. They can see how long it really is.

I had that happen at the south bound scales in Grapevine. They told me to stop, I went and parked. They told me inside that next time I need to stop there, but seeing as I didn't, get out! When I went back, I saw why they asked me to stop. It was because I never slid them back when I picked up the load.

 

I got a ticket in Cali a couple of years back for two holes back, 40'8". $186. Not at a coop, either. Highway patrol sitting at a red light in Susanville as I drove through. Got out his tape measure and boom.

The dumbest thing I've ever seen... these companies that put the measurements right on the side of the trailer. This is why you need to carry a can of spray paint, same color as your trailer. Make the cop get out his tape measure. Never snitch on yourself.

As for the original problem, call your dispatch and explain the situation. This is their problem, don't make it yours. If they tell you to run with it, tell them to send it over the qualcom, so that they own it. Otherwise, tell them you won't run the illegal load. Unless you have $186 burning a hole in your pocket.

 

I appreciate you posting this so that I and whoever else may be concerned knows about the risk, however serious or slight, so that they can choose to throw stuff to the front of the trailer, gamble, or whatever.
