How:
Not inspecting the trailer often enough. There was either a massive crack there for several weeks/months or a lot of rot in the frame. Both should have been easy to see.
Fix:
If it was just a crack that finally caused it to rip off, call a mobile welder and have them repair it.
If its because of rot, that trailer should be taken OOS and needs to be taken to a shop. You'll need to get the trailer empty and then have someone come out and make that trailer safe to pull to a shop. You cannot tow that trailer down the road as it is right now, even if empty. Depending on the laws where you are they may end up removing the wheels and possibly axle as well so that it can be pulled to a shop for repairs. -
Thank your lucky stars someone is looking out for you.. had the happened on the highway. You and others could be dead right now. Pretrip is more than a checkmark on elog

Looking at the inside of the channel, that thing is heavily rotted from the inside. The tandem chassis probably needs scrapped and just salvage the axle assemblies, provided those components aren’t past their service life, too.
bzinger, High Stepper and Concorde Thank this. -
From the picture that looks like its been broke for a while ... there is rust on the tear..
Might as well get a tire too cause somebodys got all the good outa it toobzinger, Cattleman84 and Concorde Thank this. -
Good reason to keep your rails well lubricated. Rusty rails don’t like to slide especially if they aren’t slid often enough.
Over time it probably developed a hairline crack from being forced too much.
Subzero temperatures can and will make steel brittle also.
if it was me, I wouldn’t put 10 cents into it. I’d scrap it and get a new one. -

If that was up to me I would get someone to take the tires and wheels off and put them in the back of the trailer. Chain the axle up and disconnect air to those bags. Where is the leveling valve that could be an issue. May have to install a regulator for bags on other axle. Then go home and lick my wounds.
It is not that big of a deal if the rust is not to bad.If the rust is bad look for a used assembly. People wreck them every day. What is the cost of each, down time and is the trailer worth it?
Where I am at, if you could find a mobile guy to come out and fix it, you could buy a new one for the same money.bzinger, High Stepper, AModelCat and 1 other person Thank this. -
What I really wanted to say is
From.the picture that trailer looks like a heeping POS.. and that is the best thing that could of happen to it so now it can go the the scrap pile before it causes a serious accidentMagoo1968, BoxCarKidd and Concorde Thank this. -
Bad bushings maybe? Was it dog legging and stuff before this happened, or before you noticed it had happened?
