I worked with a carrier who told all us drivers to never grease the fifth wheel for this very reason. instead, the carrier's shop manufactured a fifth wheel plastic slide on top of the area...and asked us to not slam so hard into the trailer when hooking up....these worked just fine and posed no problem to me for use...they had to be replaced every year but it was kind of nice to not have so much grease on that pin.
There are several different models that you can go greaseless with, but you are still suppose to grease the jaws.
I use to just use a disc when I only pulled my trailer, but dropping and hooking . greaseless jus doesn't work so well.
