Being leased to a carrier, which state do you guys register your own trailers at?

Also register without paying sales tax.

Maine requires DOT # and you cannot use DOT # that is not yours.

How do you guys do this?
Please be as specific as possible.
    Thank you.

I have a lifetime non expiring trailer plate from Ky, I believe it was a hundred bucks or so. Only downside is you have to contact the PVA every year to avoid property taxes by proving the vehicle is used Interstate. A coworker of mine uses a Maine plate on his trailer and he uses the companies DOT number just like I do. You may want a second opinion on what you were told about Maine not allowing you to use numbers of the carrier you are leased to.

I wonder if you need to have a LLC to have a Maine trailer plate then? Several guys where I'm leased to have maine trailer plates running under the companies DOT number.

    Thank you.
I’m sure it is the case with Maine. My first thought was to register myself, so when I pulled the form from the Maine dmv, it says that you can only put your own DOT #, and if you are leased to a carrier the sales tax exception does not apply, and you are liable for 5.5% sales tax when registering.

Not sure about the LLC requirement.
From what I have been told it is very easy if you use one of the services to do it for you. I don’t think they charge much to do it.

Call this outfit in Maine: STAAB Agency. Phone # (207) 549-7541.

they are wicked nice, and helpfull, well respected, and know all the answers to your questions.

I am not from Maine, but have all my trailers registered there, and have had for over two decades. No muss, no fuss. Call 'em.

When I got mine last month I went with a Maine tag too..

The dealer said Oklahoma also does out of state registration, no sales tax. Didn't bother looking into it, but may be an option if the DOT # is fouling you up..

Bean Jr. and starmac Thank this.
