Being leased to a carrier, which state do you guys register your own trailers at?
Also register without paying sales tax.
Maine requires DOT # and you cannot use DOT # that is not yours.
How do you guys do this?
Please be as specific as possible.
Thank you.

I wonder if you need to have a LLC to have a Maine trailer plate then? Several guys where I'm leased to have maine trailer plates running under the companies DOT number.
-
I’m sure it is the case with Maine. My first thought was to register myself, so when I pulled the form from the Maine dmv, it says that you can only put your own DOT #, and if you are leased to a carrier the sales tax exception does not apply, and you are liable for 5.5% sales tax when registering. -
Not sure about the LLC requirement.
Jacoooooooo Thanks this. -
I used the Staab Agency Maine Trailer Registration & Title Applications - Staab Agency in Maine. I don't remember having to give a DOT number, but I had one anyway. According to their form, you don't need to provide it.
AFC, singlescrewshaker, JonJon78 and 1 other person Thank this. -

I am not from Maine, but have all my trailers registered there, and have had for over two decades. No muss, no fuss. Call 'em.Bean Jr., singlescrewshaker and JonJon78 Thank this. -
guess we were typing at the same time! Lol
you did a better job though!Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Also used Staab for decades, never gave a DOT number, never paid sales tax.

When I got mine last month I went with a Maine tag too..
The dealer said Oklahoma also does out of state registration, no sales tax. Didn't bother looking into it, but may be an option if the DOT # is fouling you up..
