I will try this Staab. Called them, they said they won’t require sales tax if it’s over 3k lbs empty anyways, so I guess they have a way around it.

Correct. Always had my big stuff with Maine tags,semi-trailers,lowboy,flip axle etc. No tax, long term plates, perfectly legal. Now my 3k race car trailer,I had to title and tax it in Md.,but I long term tagged it in Maine so I didn't have to fool with Md state inspections.

Whatever your home state is should be issuing the non exp. plates... well the two states I have experience in does. If you haven’t already, you could Look into “rolling stock” exemption, most states have them. I think I used that for the trailer registration too

My state (NY) don’t want to touch my trailer registration. I’m leased to a PA carrier and my NY dmv requires tons of documents including NY liability insurance, and won’t accept their PA Insurrance. Too much hassle to fight with NY dmv. I would loose the remaining few of my hair.
They would honor the tax exemption without any problems though.

When I was still in NM, I had to license my trailers every year, I started just buying permanent tags in Alaska.
I do not know if the regular dmv will do it or not, but we used to have private contract dots and she would do everything by mail when I bought a new trailer. We now have a private dmv here, called quick dmv, I do not know if they would do the mail thing or not though.

New Yuck is a tax hungry state. Yeah, you can register in ME, but if NY based, you have 30 days to get NY tags, or face the fine...

I don't see how they can make you license your trailer in NY or even title it. I would think even your truck could be registered out of state if least to an out of state carrier.

Real simple, if your BASED in NY, NY wants their revenue. I know guys based in NY who took the cheaper route and bragged about plating their trailers in ME at the Goose Pond rd address. This went on for years, but time catches up. Now guess what, troopers are issuing tickets. Sure you can register your trailer in ME, but within 30 days, if based in NY you had better re-register and pay the man in New Yuck....Why do you think it's called the "empire" state, home of fines, fees & taxes, just one step behind californica…..
