I'm going to lease-to-own a 2014 dry van trailer that I'm going to pick up in Indiana.
I live in Pennsylvania and my truck is registered in Pennsylvania.

Will I have to drive back to Pennsylvania to register my trailer?
Or can I register it in another state?
Will I have to renew registration yearly, like a truck?
About how much does registration usually cost?

Please give me as much complete information as possible.
Thanks in advance for your help :)

Shouldn't the leasing company provide the tag?

It depends on the expected outcome at the end of the deal. Could be either way.

On a rental you probably won't keep at the end, it should already be titled and registered to the leasing company.

If you're doing a lease-buyout deal, where the intent is ownership at the end, they often title/register like a finance deal. In the lessee's name with the lessor as a lien holder. I have one like this.

I have no idea what it costs to title or register a trailer in PA. Knowing PA, it's probably expensive. Call or stop by the office that issues them and just ask. For what it's worth, in Georgia you pay a flat $50 fee to get the plate, then every year they bill you a $20 tag fee plus ad valorem tax based on the value of the trailer, roughly 2% if memory serves.

My trailers are now titled and registered in Maine via an agency. It saves me a ton of money. There are several agencies there. I used staabagency.com. Great service with no problems, even on a new trailer title and registration. Their website has good information about the process.

I've noticed a lot of leasing companies have Maine plates on their trailers and I figured it was to save some $$$.

Maine or Tennessee seem to be the two favorites.

I went thru the same thing,PA is a title state which means the trailer must be titeld in PA so you can get it registered.
Either u get the leasing company to give you power of attorney to get a dummy title(thats what penndot call it) or like it was said just get a maine registration.in my experience the leasing company got me maine plates on their dime

Trailer tags are cheap and easy. Get a 30 day temp to get it home and then buy a permanent tag once your back to pa. The possible down side to a Pa plate is that you have to get a Pa inspection. You can't go just anywhere to get it. But.... I've heard that Pa DOT will now accept a federal highway inspection sticker.
