I've been looking at new drop deck trailers. My current drop deck has a swing clearance of 102" ( distance from kingpin to neck drop). All of the trailers I've looked at are at 80"-86". Is that long enough to load the truck properly and the rear of the truck not get into the trailer neck? The necks just seem awfully short on the standard models. I'm wondering if I should go to the extra expense of custom ordering a longer neck.
Trailer swing clearance

Are you talking about the upper deck?
Most upper decks will come with either 10' or 11' upper decks. The 10' upper deck should have an 18" king pin set back. The 11' can be safe with 30" or 18".
The problem usually is with clearance beyween the landing gear and the rear of the truck. There are some steps with 8' upper decks and even 10' upper decks with a 30" king pin set back. This puts the landing gear very close to the mudflaps and tires of the truck... particularly when taking turns.
Most try to compansate by sliding the 5th wheel all the way back. But many still have problems.
I have a 53' step. 10' upper with 43' on my lower deck. 18" king pin set back, plus my 5th wheel is set all the way back. This gives me plenty of clearance between the landing gear and back of my tractor.
The down side to this is in the overall length of the truck and trailer. Manuvering in tight shallow streets or other places can be challenging. Plus there are roads in many states that limit the over all length and this comination would not be legal. It also adds to the distance between the king pin and center rear axles. When the axles are spread.. my setup is not California legal... Ct and Fl will both fine you.as well. Fl offers a $20 annual permit. Ct if memory serves right will not hassle you as long as you stay on interstate hwys. Cali.. well.. I'm not legal in Cali so I dont run there very much.

The trailers I'm looking at are actually slide axle tilt trailers, not your typical drop deck. The Landoll is something like 20" setback with 86" swing clearance ( distance between the kingpin and landing gear). Some of the other manufacturers are 80".
With my 5th wheel all the way back I can't get any weight on the steer axle. It will actually take weight off my steer axle.
The usable upper deck space on these trailers is minimal due to the winch and most taper off on the rearLast edited: Sep 10, 2016

My local Landoll dealer is a idiot. When I mentioned something about specing a longer neck, they looked at me like I was crazy and said the'd never heard anything like that. They don't have a clue.
I'm leaning toward a XL Specialized trailer a the moment. Of course their stock model has a short neck but the dealer is specing me one with the options I want.Chewy352 Thanks this. -
I've never bought my own truck and trailer but wouldn't they let you bring your tractor out and test it on a couple different trailers?

Probably talking different trailers here (mine's DD/RGN), but I wish I had a flip neck on mine & keep it at 48' unless I need it. It's a struggle getting weight on the steer with some loads. I've got removable mudflaps now which will help get some more weight forward- 5" behind front drive now with 86" swing.
I'm still looking for that 48' 55t trailer with 82-120" adjustable swing, 3 axle, 29' well, hydraulic, that weighs 15,460#....... -
I'm sure I could just bobtail my truck and do some measuring and see how far forward I can run my 5th wheel.Chewy352 Thanks this.
