We have a air assist detachable gooseneck and where the arm comes down from the neck to the main deck and you have a choice of two wedges or none at all.

Here is a pic of where the wedges go on our trailer.

The largest wedge gives you the most clearance where none is the lowest setting. I hope that makes sense and I've never been around a mechanical one so not sure if it's the same concept or not.

On the rear suspension the trailer has a 5 position ride height you can choose to adjust the rear clearance.

This particular trailer wants a 48" height on the fifth wheel.

Mine has 5 positions also, it's made to run at 6".

It is,and on a mechanical neck like on a TK 60,using wedges like I've explained will help pick the front end up,and increase ground clearence dramatically.

So, is just a piece of angle iron enough? Will it damage anything since it really only makes a point contact? Or should I try to get a real tapered wedge?

No,you will need wedges, when driven in the will take all of your slack out of your neck, and when you hook up,the weight of the trailer will hold them in place. Make sure you are not hooked to the neck when driving in the wedges.
