A good pilot car would have blocked the tracks.

What could have been to to prevent this? It looks like he got hung up maybe with a poor set up or a slight mistake on the steersman. Who knows. I would imagine even with a perfect set up it’s going to take some back and forth to get across the tracks. What it that train showed up 3 minutes earlier? Even with a perfect setup a collision is possible.
I’ve never had a situation where I’ve needed or tried to contact the railroad. Pulling a trailer with no steering, it’s swing wide and gas on it. Back and forth doesn’t help much.

The blade tip overhangs quite a bit. There are obstacles on the other side of the highway that they’re trying to avoid breaking the tip.

As soon as those arms came down, the driver should have hugged the left side of the street and the steerman swing the rear left and straighten. Odds are they would have broken the tip….but that’s okay. And like Big Ronnie brought out, that front car freakin bombed by parking directly in front.

The driver bombed by hooking hard right. He dropped the rear in the ditch.

In the video he’s up against the crossing arm on the right side. Did he cut through the gas station to round off the corner but the put him in the position of being between the crossing arm and the stop light with all the rear overhang?

It doesn’t look as if there would be enough room between the pole and the gas station canopy. The beam of the trailer would hit the RRXXpole before the tip would clear that corner pole. And with the canopy on the right, you have less options.

In tight situations, you can crab walk and do 3-4 point turns. That helps tremendously, but it’s a slow process.

Hmmm, that’s what put him at the RRXX pole.

@Rontonio, did you pull through the gas station? And how tall were your loads. We had to cut through a gas station in Oklahoma and one of the guys hit the canopy with a 55m blade that was 14’6 tall. And that’s worlds smaller than the ones you pull.

we were 15 2 tall 15 wide and 284’ long - we came from a different direction - so not exactly the same. There were a number corners where we had to walk the tip around objects (think bridge pillars and light poles) by pulling forward and moving the tip across and then backing up to gain the turning room. We had corners where we had to put the tip over concrete sound walls - as you know each corner has its own challenges. We would carry wooden ramps to get us up on tall islands or curbs - what ever it takes.
We once had to do a route alteration because a small town wouldn’t let us through anymore. The altered route added 200 miles to the trip - only problem is the route survey brought us to a corner wouldn’t make - unless we cut down a flag pole …..

so we made a deal with the homeowner and paid him cash and cut the pole down. Sometimes….

It’s just driving and anyone can hold a steering wheel, right?

We had Grand Island NB stop us from coming through south of the Big Bosselman Pilot.
