I'm going into week 4 with my mentor and have spent more time in shop status than out on the road. I have only 106 driving hours out of the 240 required and I have over 210 offduty/sleeper hours. We have been to almost every Kenworth and Cummins shop on the west. I'm starting to get frustrated and I don't know what to do. We just got the truck yesterday after being in the shop all day in the MHC Kenworth in Denver. Today on our way to pick up for a Coors run to Elkton, Va it tripped another Engine code and lost throttle. Now we are back in Kenworth and lost the load. :biggrin_25516:

Now, I like my mentor and he's very good. He's been very patient and really laid back with me and I think I'm very fortunate considering some of the horror stories I've read about some mentors. I feel like I'm never gonna get my hours in if I stay. However if I ask for another mentor I'm afraid of who I might get. I also don't want him to take it personaly, I know he's frustrated, he's on a lease purchase and not making any money with all this downtime either. Any suggestions?

Shop time is part of trucking and as you said your mentor is frustrated too. If it were me, knowing that mentors are in short supply right now, and you have a decent one, I suggest you stick it out a bit longer.

What inkeper said. Good mentors are always hard to find.
At least you should be getting your training pay, which will probably be more than you will make in your first couple of weeks after going solo.

The first year of driving is the worst.

I'm a trainee, and in shop status myself. The truck is supposed to be done Tuesday, which will be 4 weeks with mentor, but 2 on the road. I told Driver Services, when I went into shop status, that I would elect to stay home unpaid, instead of get a new mentor, because I have an awesome mentor, that cares more about making sure I am ready for solo, than the extra money.

Hopefully, your truck problems get worked out, and you can get your hours going.

Is it any wonder I don't want a KW?

Learn as much as you possibly can about why that truck is misbehaving. What it's doing, how it sounds and the final diagnosis. Pay close attention to what the mechanic says....even weather when the code shows up. It will help you down the road. And, if possible, stay with a good mentor.

Listen to this lady above, she's a heck of a smart one:yes2557:. You are on a mentors truck to learn. This is a learning experience. Use it wisely. Believe me, it's better to gain some experiences with an older hand nearby. And on the positive side, you're still getting training pay while in the shop, correct?

    Injun and inkeper Thank this.

Being in the shop is frustrating, but so is trucking. If you can't handle it while in training, how are you going to handle it solo? Learn patience.

Stay where you are and learn as much as you can. And remember you learn more when things are going wrong than you do when everything is going perfect. You're going to be on your own soon enough and you may have a lot of the problems you're facing now, the only difference is you'll be alone. Stick it out. JMHO

I got to go with the majority opinion here, you have a good mentor stick it out,all the opinions regarding your post are very valid to your situation, don't give up a "known good quantity" for the unknown, you have no idea who or what situation you may end up with if you move on............MHO:biggrin_25511:
