Been working with High Desert for the last three days in the WY/CO Oilfields hauling clean and flow-back water. Seems like a fun job, dirty and long days, but fun and interesting. I started a thread over in the "Discuss your favorite trucking company" area.

I know that Conway just opened a new terminal here in Cheyenne and are looking for local drivers. Home every night and pay is hourly. Check wyomingnews.com as well. Other than that I'm not really sure who else is hiring at this time.

Hello everybody. I am also looking for more information on SAGE here in Cheyenne and obtaining a grant. I currently work as a Broadcast Technician at EchoStar, and I'm looking for a new change in career. My problem is that I only make $30,000 a year and with a stay at home mommy, daughter, and another one on the way in July. I can't afford to hardly put food on the table let alone pay tuition, but I'm not sure where to turn for grant information. I'm also looking for any help in getting started with this change, as I plan to go trucking after this new baby is born in July. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would highly suggest you try to find something else to do. If you get started in the trucking industry you will be away from your family for weeks at a time. and with a new baby that is a very bad idea. What if there are complications with the child and you are out of the state? Also you would only be starting around $25k to $35k depending on who you go with and how long you stay out and etc. So not only would you be making the same if not less, you would also have to pay for your own expenses out on the road and still try to send money back home for your family.

Hey MacGuy81. You will have no problem getting the state grant which will cover everything at Sage. Believe me I know because I also worked at Echostar as a Network Engineer and made quite a bit more than you when I went to Sage here in Cheyenne and was given the grant. I didn't pay a single penny out of my pocket for the training including obtaining my CDL with endorsements. Sage awards the grant themselves so all you have to do is go in and talk to them. Also, there are local gigs which you can do and not have to be OTR. I haul fuel for Gemini which is Love's and I'm home every night and on my days off. No OTR here. There are other places here in Cheyenne hiring local which I can point you towards once you get your CDL. Sage here is awesome and they were great in their training. I learned a great deal from them and they actually referred me to my current employer, so I have them to thank for my job as well. Believe me there isn't a day that goes by that I regret my decision to leave Echostar and get my CDL. It has been one of the best career decisions I've made. Send me a PM if you want more info or hit me up on here and I'll be glad to answer your questions and help you get setup with Sage.

Thank You!! I think you are the first person ever to give me positive encouragement in this decision outside of my wife, who will support me no matter what. I think it truly takes working at EchoStar to fully understand my desire to leave. I've always had a dream of driving trucks, and this is kind of me chasing a dream. A part of me thinks seeing the lower 48 states would be awesome, but I also like the idea of driving local and being home every night. Jury is still out on that decision, but probably will take a local job if the option is there. Then there is the third option that my wife would like to move closer to Longmont, CO where her family is. A lot of things are up in the air right now, but I'm ready to get started. If I do the OTR deal, it would be in July after the baby is born, but like I said, I will probably do local if I can land one. Anyway, thanks for the positive words, and I'll keep in touch.

No problem at all and let us know what you decide. Sage is a 5 to 6 week program so look into them soon and you can be done with CDL in hand by the time your baby is born. :)

Well, I'm up to start with Sage on Monday.. Had to go back to the drawing board -- no one wants to hire without either recent (within 3 years) experience or a driving school grad certificate. I know I could use the refresher, but dang..

Oh well, chokin down my pride and headin on out! Hopefully this will be the break I need for getting back on the road..

(Btw, Jynxx, thanks for startin this thread many moons ago! I'd heard some differing opinions on the school here .. you and Hanzerik tipped the scales for me to finally go to them. Thanks again.)

No problem at all! I can imagine the frustration of having to go back to school just to have some experience to show due to being out of the seat for a while. I was pleased with my Sage Cheyenne experience and I like the gals in the front office and the trainers. They are a good bunch of people. What I'm wondering though is don't they offer a driver refresher course for those who have been out of a truck for a while but still hold a CDL? You don't have to go all the way through their 6 week program do you? Keep us posted on how things go for you and welcome back driver!
