Hello, Names Tina..
My soon to be husband is about to start TDI Truck Driver Institute in Oxford.
I have been very concerned about the things i have been reading here, scared even. Such as his School, TDI. The guy at the office, very nice as he was, spoke about how good the training was and that he will get my fiance lots of job offers and there is lots of money to make, upwards of 1110.00 a week (before taxes, of course) # 3000 Miles a week.
He also recomended Stevens. Which from what i read here is a HORRIBLE place to work.
I also was there when they spoke, and my fiance asked about me riding along.. he said after 8weeks i could and that it would be around 500 a year for insurance for me.
I don't intend on driving, atleast night right away. I may after i am with him in the truck a while.
my question is, as to calm my mind an heart that this isn't a big mistake, IF this school turns out well, Where should my fiance work that will give him the miles, and allow me in the truck full time, not like this 3 week period junk.
Thank you very much for listening
The scared fiance

He recommended Stevens, because your husband won't get trained at the school. He will have the barest of essential training....shifting, driving, and even less backing. Stevens will finish his training, at greatly reduced wages. And Stevens is a driver mill, pure and simple.
That's the poorest excuse for a school I've ever seen. Your husband won't learn to drive a truck inside a classroom. I say that, because he will spend more time in a classroom, than behind the wheel.
Unless they have made drastic changes, it's a waste of his time and money. Check into another source if possible. BeVill Community College in Sumiton, AL will offer him more "wheel" time, and practical experience.
And the cost will be a lot cheaper.
If your husband wants to check the facts. Have him ask WHERE he will take his driving test. The driving course in Sumiton is the strictest in AL and half the distance as Montgomery. But he will have to take his driving test, in Montgomery.
PS... there are 20 and 30 year vets sitting in truckstops for days.... NOT getting 3000 miles, and making less than $500 a week. -
Fact is trucking is tough right now. Some weeks 3000+ is no problem others a 1000 is a tough deal. As a rookie AFTER training he will start good then it will fade to more realistic level. When the freight is normal a good drive can make a good wage. But right now it's a roll of the dice week to week. During training he will get about $250-$350 a week for 4-8 weeks. Then it will go to $400-750. Deepending on taxs and such. This will be a more realistic figure. As for you riding most companies won't let you ride till you get married. Insurance thing. The BS artiest at the school is telling you what you need hear to get you in to the school.
Would suggest that you talk to Knight in Columbus OH. The have a program called Squire which is a really good training program. You go out with a trainer where you do all the driving. None of this BS where the trainer dose half the driving and the truck is just another team truck for the company. After training you run for them as a solo working with an experienced DM who works with you to teach you how to do the job right. After 6 mos. You got to work for Knight Trans. After 6 mos. you can go to work for Knight Refrigerated if you want.
