    First, I am not a trucker !

I have been thinking about going into trucking for a while and noticed some places train for a long time and some for a short time.
I am not down playing driving a truck at all but it seems like anything else, some people learn quicker than others. I am 60 and have been driving for 44 yrs and although not a tractor and trailer I still have a lot of "driving" experience.

I think driving a big rig will come easier for some and should take less training . I hate the thought of sharing a truck with someone but if that's what it takes.

Chinatown mentioned Watkins & Shepherd as having a 10 day orientation. I would think this is plenty for some and not enough for others.

Would enjoy others thoughts on this and maybe their story when they trained.

I know you are always learning but when did you feel you we're really ready to go solo.

    Thanks

44 yes of bad 4 wheeling ungoverned habits.

    :p

It will take you time to adjust those.

A monkey could do this job really though.

Just be mature behind the wheel.

Orientation is for experienced drivers, not CDL training. It's ~half orientation and ~half driver evaluation. It's hard to maintain an act or fake an attitude toward safety for 10 days.

After about 2 days, but I was wrong. After 20 days I'd learned enough to not be confident, and my pucker factor remained high every moment my brakes weren't set. Too many motorists trying to commit suicide by semi. YMMV.

So are you saying you think you could learn faster then others because you have driving exp?Driving a semi is nothing like your personal vehicle. There's more to it then just driving down the road. Also there is a lot more to learn then just driving to this carreer and why training is long. You need to learn the laws, the hours of service and how to log, pretrip. So much to learn and can't be done in a short time. Many trainnes don't get the right amount of training and look what happens on our hwys. The longer you train and with a good trainer, the better driver u will be.The shorter the training the worse you'll be.

For new drivers most major national require at least 160 hours of class room training and the driver needs to use a 48/53' trailer. After you get the CDL from a reliable school then you need anywhere from 40k miles with a trainer or equivalent. If your a fast learner you can go to one of the 4 week training centers or the 9 month college courses.

I am not saying anything but I think driving for 44 yrs I am more prepared than someone 21 yrs old. I am just asking other people their thoughts on when they felt ready. Like I say I am not downplaying truck drivers. And I am not talking about all the other stuff like pretrips, HOS laws and stuff. I have learned a lot of that stuff online already. I am just talking about the driving part.
When did you feel confident enough to go solo, just the driving part.

Not really. Let's say you got your DL at 16. That's 28 years of bad habits. I think 2 months is a good time to let a trainee go, if it's with a good trainer who actually taught the driver. And still there's a lot to cover, especially winter conditions.

I know you're not downplaying trk drivers. You're just asking simple questions. But as a trk driver myself I can tell you it doesn't matter how much exp you have driving your car,a semi is a whole new exp.I never felt truly confident when I first went solo.I was nervous and scared. It came with exp when I felt confident.I had a real good trainer but all of what he taught me went out the window once I got my trk.See with a trainer you feel more at ease because hes their if anything goes wrong. But once you get your own trk,you have to think things for yourself.Everything in trucking comes with exp and practice.

There is so much you have to learn in this field and all of it can't be done no matter how long your training is even just the driving part. The real learning comes when you're on your own.
