Got my cdl 3 weeks ago and been out with my trainer 2 weeks now.

Got picked up and got to know him first day. Was doing a drop off and he referred to the glad hands as “red - main” and “blue - return.” I was like yes sir.

Next day of driving with him; I go to adjust seat and then the flat mirrors and he said the mirrors were fine. Drivers side was sorta doable but passengers side was mostly trailer. Reported to him that I couldn’t see out of it and he didn’t really say anything.

Since then I’ve been adjusting the seat to see out of his mirrors but get neck and arm pain.

He stops every hour or so to bathroom or get food; but seems to expect me to only take the 30 during my time. Has me running late afternoon into early AM... so not usually any parking if I do try to stop and eating up the time seems to annoy him.

Company I’m with has very few true teams; so most of the loads have solo schedules. The trainer does seem able to do early drop-off / pickup about half the time. So I definitely understand if it’s a schedule thing; but it just feels... well doesn’t matter.

Was told to be prepared for cold weather; I really thought I was... I often feel warmer outside then in the cab. It’s 42 outside and he’s got it set full blast A/C inside. I had 5 layers on top; doubled my socks and my hands, feet, and face were still freezing. He’s in the back sleeping with his shirt off and a blanket.

He asked how I was going to be handling the cold weather and I said “I would turn the heat on sir, or pull over and get out.”

Pretty much afraid too touch stuff in the cab; about the only button I’ve operated properly is turning on the mirror heaters.

I’ve also gotten to know him a bit. Went on about conspiracies... was only able to say yes sir.

He also said he only trains new cdl holders; won’t touch refreshers. I wonder why; they might know enough to push back?

Not really sure what my options are. I know the company considers him to be a good trainer. So I don’t want a he said, I said thing. I’m more inclined to just get my 6 weeks done with.

I could’ve ended up with someone worse...

If you cannot see, adjust the mirrors.

If you are cold, turn the AC fan off in the cab...there’s a different set of controls for the sleeper.

If you want to listen to a different genre of music, change the channel.

“But Six, what if he gets annoyed?”

    He will get over it.

    Luck in battle.

Sounds like typical trainer bs. Id start by turning that ac off and blasting the heat until he wakes up then turn the ac back on like nothing changed.

Adjust the seat and the mirrors where you are comfortable. Then before he gets back in the driver seat, move them around some more and if he says anything, tell him you havent moved anything. Dont let him screw with you.

I cant stand hearing about these clowns that dont teach new drivers properly. Stopping every hour to use the bathroom or eat? That is just asinine. Part of me thinks that some of the guys who train are just looking for some form of control and respect because its the only time in their life anyone actually listens to them.

Tell him to go #### himself if he gets upset. He aint ur boss just a co worker.. If ur driving then its ur controls and mirrors are yours , seat is yours, climate control in cab is yours. If he says anything different tell him to stick a spatchula up his keyster then call ur dispatcher or whoever u report to during training and tell them whats going on.

Winter is here as far as YOU are concerned. You need to adapt quickly and prepare for -40 in storms.

Red is emergency (Lose that in a breakaway, your trailer will dump it's air and try to lock it's brakes before it kills someone. Blue is service braking (Your foot) If your tractor has a trolley valve on steering column then it also feeds Red Line.

YOU are the captian of your ship. When your ### is in that drivers seat YOU adjust mirriors to your needs. usually main left is along your trailer with the end of it left corner as primary interest. And the spot below that main goes to your drives to catch people hiding out there with cars, and give you early visual warning should that trailer come around.

Same as on the pax side. Your forward convex mirrors cover your front end and steers. It is also a rain storm or ice storm set of mirrors so you don't lose your way. Disregard anyone who says they are fine. Its YOU that adjusts them.

You are not going to be pulling over for a spot of winter cold and ice.

That's right. That overbearing ### is not your boss. It is your truck, your seat, your ship Captain. ALL yours. Mr Bigmouth gets to sleep in the back or ride int he pax but other than true life or death problems he has to sit there and let you do what you need to be doing Mr Trucker. You follow me?

When it time to leave the truck permanently, aren't you required to do a writeup on the training and trainer.
If so, let the company know he's a lousy trainer and why.

    Not disagreeing with you, BTW.

This was one of those instances that should have been dealt with BEFORE he left the parking lot. This is more important than even the job. You never let anyone punk you out.

I don’t care who owns what or what it is you’re driving. We are not going to have a conversation about the mirrors. Set the mirrors so that you can see or get out of the truck. Because they had that conversation about the mirrors, he now has to deal with everything else.
If he had stood his ground about the mirrors, odds are he wouldn’t have had any issues about the rest. Every thing else happened because OP backed down at the beginning.

You newbies, students and rookies, understand this: you do not ask to set the mirrors or the climate controls when you’re driving. You do not beg to go to the restroom. Understand?

Btw, this is one of those threads that @gentleroger needs to comment on.

Just gut out your final 2 weeks and you’ll have your own truck to Captain. In the mean time... move your seat and mirrors as you wish. Be safe. If it’s that cold, use the cab controls for you. He can adjust his bunk controls as he needs too. Be respectful. If he becomes unbearable, call safety...and get a new trainer if need be... but try to get through the next couple weeks and then #### him

Adjust the seat and mirrors as you need them.

Riding with your trainer is like Middle School. You are walking into a totally new environment. "The rules" are mostly unwritten. EVERYTHING gets better once you leave the trainer. Good luck. I'd probably leave the industry before I rode with a trainer again. My trainer was considerate and knowledgeable and it was very hard for me due to the sleep deprivation in a moving truck.
