Well I consider myself a pretty responsible person and figure someone just starting a job would actually try to make a good impression, I see where you're coming from. I don't understand why some people even decide to get a job if they're going to pull stuff like that, doesn't make sense to me

    THIS ^^^^^

When you get in the truck with a veteran driver watch not only how they drive, but all aspects of the job AND how they manage their time. Many trainees and new drivers wash out for lack of time management. Can't count the number of times I saw drivers in a company terminal using the free WiFi to play video games on their wide screen monitor when I knew they had to be on the clock in a few hours.

Far too many drivers have a habit of rolling out of bed minutes before they need to get the wheels turning. Get up early enough to take care of business with room to spare.

Since this thread has morphed into focusing on the 10 hour break and the merits of spending those 10 hours in the truck ready to go, please allow me to ask one additional question: If I had exhausted my hours and my trainer had exhausted his, and we needed to do a 34 hour reset, would it have been acceptable for a Trainee to spend a part of that time in a motel, alone?

Absolutely. But that will depend on where you take a 34. It might be in a truck stop or company terminal. I don't think the company will pay for a motel unless your trainer is taking home time or the truck is in the shop. If you want to pay for your own motel, then talk with your trainer.

While there are some practices from your trainer I would not engage in, there are some I do, but the point is, this is not a permanent situation. I hate to sound harsh, but, suck it up, get into your own truck and do things your way. Simply put, with trucking very rarely will all things about your situation be the way you want them to be.

If I owned a trucking company and one of my trucks was on a 34, I'd foot the motel bill.

You make a good point. Training is a temporary situation. While a really bad trainer can make life miserable, there is likely some method to their madness. Suspend your pride and comfort and get through it.

While it is said that your real training comes after you get your CDL and get in your trainer's truck, you will learn more in your first few months solo than you did in training. Part of that learning curve is because there isn't anyone there to guide you through a situation. You learn to overcome, adapt, and THINK through things in advance.

Thanks, Kidsdad. Your brutal honesty wasn't harsh at all. To the contrary, I appreciate the advice to suck it up and get into my own truck.

    Regarding the motel:

The first time we ran out of hours was at the truck stop in Little America, Wyoming. The second time in Cheraw, South Carolina. I can imagine the motel being okay in Little America, but I doubt I would have been given free reigns in Cheraw... So much has changed there!

34 - absolutely get a hotel. I have no clue what I would do with a trainee on a 34, so get the room and chill out, ready to hit it hard when we're ready to roll.
