I'm talking to a recruiter for Dallas as a regional. I've been driver, water hauler in the oil field for 2 years, was wondering if I should go through the training they offer new drivers or just do the 3 day orientation? I know how to drive but never had to worry about axle weights and trip planning. I've got my cdl on my own no schooling. have had no accidents or tickets. Drive in Ft. Worth traffic. Any info would be helpful.
The reason for getting out of the oilfield is lack of work as it is slowing down in this area.

Slowing down? Wow, companies are hiring like mad for down there. Stevens is looking to put on crazy numbers of drivers for the oil fields there along with many other companies.
If you're a fast learner just do the orientation. Your otr trainer can teach you the rest. It's not that difficult, assuming you can read a map and other stuff required such as proper pre and post-trips, sliding tandems, basic vehicle maintenance, etc. You can get a guide for bridge weights and other stuff. Buy a Rand McNally Motor Carrier' Road Atlas as a start. -
Ive been in training for 9 weeks now (12 week program), and that Atlas has saved my bacon more than a few times. Good advice.

Thanks for the info. Yeah the oilfield is slowing down in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area a lot of companies are headed to south Texas and West Texas. Good money there but my wife has a good job here.

Speaking as a TE. The decision to pass a student along to SQT, the final test so to speak, is a mutual decision. If your good then you will get passed along quickly. If you want to that is, you may want more training. I would say trip planning and Qualcomm issues are the hardest for students to get in general.

On this we agree, it's all about how you feel.

but he wouldnt be coming in as inexperienced. He would come in as experienced , wouldnt he? Therefore SQT's only after orientation?
-
Since he was a local driver working the oil fields he's basically considered "no experience" when hiring on for OTR, so he'll probably have to go through all of the training stuff like he's a newbie (i think, don't quote me but as far as pay goes they'll put him at the bottom rung).

I'm going in as experienced 1-3 years.

Well got through the training and did my first run. Got a Silver 2010 Cascadia with 113000 mi on it. My First Load was a relay to Monroe La, Then Deadhead to Pineville, La pick A proctor and Gamble load, Off to Savannah GA, then to Winston-Salem NC, over Greensboro, then to North Wilkesboro, Then all the way back to TX up Oklahoma back to Dallas then a couple of Local runs.
Broke my glasses on the trip good thing I had contacts with me. Learned a lot this trip. Did figure out I need to get my blue box in the truck think I got weight 8-9 times since I didn't have the pre-pass. Hoping my DBL can keep me with the good miles.jomar68 Thanks this.
