I am scheduled to attend orientation with Werner on 3/11/09. However, Transam called me on Friday to schedule a date to go to orientation with them. I have read how Werner will keep you on your trainers truck past your training time and pay you next to nothing, or send you home to wait. Then after 30 day let you go. If you do get a truck then you get little or no miles. I know freight is slow. Transam trains you, then holds you hostage until you lease with them just to get a truck. Or, after a long wait you get assigned a company truck. I have read on here it could take as long as 8 weeks. Then the miles go to the lease drivers so they can make their lease payments. Knowing this....What company is the lesser of two evils. I have bills to pay. You know a wife and two kids bla bla bla. Where will I be likely to make more money as a student driver from Michigan? Werner or Transam? Thank you in advance for the advice.

I would not go with either one especially with all the information about them on this forum. If these 2 are your absolute only choice I would wait until the economy gets better and wait for a better company to train you.

If I wait until the economy gets better then the $4,500 I spent on trucking school will be a waste of money. I would need to go back to school again. The only jobs in Michigan are minimum wage jobs.

    1)Move......?
2)work two shifts at burger king
3)pretend your nuts, and get disability
4)become a thief ,and get caught, then you will be able to drive big trucks.... (if the economy gets better, upon your release)

Talk to both of them again. Have a list of questions in front of you. Weigh the pros and cons with each of the companies. Please do not believe everything that you read on here. Some is very much fact and a lot is from people who are not happy where they are and tend to not be so truthful. There is that phrase about "taking things with a grain of salt..."
Make sure that you are clear on the salary, very clear... Also you might ask about benefits and what is taken out of your check. What will you get paid during training is another good thing to ask about. We all work for reward and need to know what we will be making. This is your future and career at stake, so ask and make sure that you understand what they are telling you.
Does Werner have a facility near you? Does TransAm or do they have customers in your area that would make it possible to get home?
Don't be shy, ask what you need to know. The company wants to know all about you and it's only fair that you get the information you need to make an intelligent decision about where you want to work.
Best of luck in your decision.

Baack, billsgirl and bigbluedog Thank this.
