I went to a truck driving school through Prime Inc. in Springfield, MO back in in February. Unfortunately I did not pass my learner's permit test so I ended up getting sent home. I am seriously considering giving it another try with going to a truck driving school in my home state of Illinois. One of my questions is I passed the DOT physical while I was in the state of Missouri and was wondering if that would transfer over to Illinois? Another thing I came across while researching on the internet is I heard its illegal to hold 2 DMV licenses. Does this mean that if I do get a CDL License would my regular drivers license have to become invalid? What I mean is well the CDL also act as a regular drivers license for my regular car or are two treated as 2 different licenses?

The CDL is also your drivers license for automobiles.

You should be able to use your DOT physical paperwork in Illinois. CDLs are federally regulated, so the requirements are universal for all states, and are recognized by all states. But, states like to be weird about these things sometimes, and you should probably direct this question to your DMV office.

IL uses the federal form not modified like CA. From anywhere is acceptable. It's good until it's expiration but as soon as you hire in with a company they will make you take a new physical by the doctor of their choice. In the future when you do get your CDL you have to take any new medical card down to the DMV and let them make a copy of it or they'll downgrade you back to a class D. They'll copy it this first time when you go get your permit. You ought to go get your permit on your own before school just to make sure you pass before forking out school money.

It's good you get your permit and CDL in IL because they are one of few states that make transfers back in state difficult by full retesting including the road test. So you might as well get your training in state to avoid that hassle.

Your class of license is all attached to your DL#. It's still the same old number attached to you. They upgrade and downgrade the class as needed. The higher the class is not specific but covers everything below it too. Class A can drive anything with wheels except a school bus and motorcycle but you can get them endorsements. Class B is restricted to Class B vehicles and below, etc. You DL # sticks with you like a SSN. If you move out of state and back to IL your # will be waiting on you.

Consider going to a technological or community college for your training. They'll work closer with you and not herd you through like cattle. Many small colleges have certificate programs for truck driving and I'm sure there is one close to you.
