Yeah, I said it! Why hasn't anyone brought this up, ever? The following pertains to drivers looking to transfer to another division or location.
In order to do either you will need permission from your safety manager and your division manager. Long story short, since each terminal operates like a small company, your division manager will most likely not let you transfer, and tell you that you will have to quit the company and reapply after a certain period of time. (Due to the fact that your terminal will lose income by you transfering, blah blah etc).
Who the hell runs and operates a company like this with such stupid rules? Stories and responses. I want to hear from you!

The reasoning behind making each terminal responsible for it's own profit and loss was and is sound business. If one branch suffered, it wouldn't kill the entire tree. The problem is that if you are in another terminal's freight area, and your terminal does not play well with that one, you may as well resign yourself to getting the shorthaul, garbage load because they will cherry pick the good freight for their drivers! The folks in Twin Falls are the WORST!!! I would HATE to unload in their region because I would have to accept at least 2 craap loads to get out of their area!
Another game They like to play because of this stupid system, If you need work done on your truck, unless you WANT to sit for a day or 3, don't take your truck to any terminal except your own to get fixed!!! They will pass you over to fix their own trucks first. PHOENIX TERMINAL WAS THE WORST FOR ME!!! 10 hours to do a simple "A" service!!! (Half a55ed inspection, and top off all the fluids)statikuz Thanks this. -
Compared to any other company, this is a stupid policy that creates an unnecessary rival throughout the different terminals. This is supposed to be ONE COMPANY! At least at my last company, Werner, and all of the piss-poor management they had after the old man steppped down, doesn't operate their different terminals like rival factions within the same company.
Like you said, here at Knight:
A). Need truck maintenance? Prepare for games.
B). Waiting on a load? Prepare to work a couple of local runs at the equivalent of three dollars an hour.
C). Good luck transferring if you wanted to gain experience in a different division.
Okay now for some good things about their management:
That's all! -
Not really related to the thread topic, but based on the comment that each terminal is run like a separate business - I can see the idea here behind making the terminal management responsible for their operation, to a point, but you can tell when terminal managers just don't give a #### or are trying to save pennies. I have no idea if each terminal gets a budget based on how many drivers they have assigned there or something, but it annoys me how one terminal will have a flat screen TV with some satellite service, decent showers, ice machine, vending machines, paved lot, etc. and then the next one MIGHT have a porta-potty. It would be nice if they would try to provide the same amenities at each location (maybe make that a corporate responsibility or something). Again I have no idea how terminal management actually is set up either organizationally or financially, just ranting a bit.

I have had truck maintenance take forever, and then have it take a reasonable amount of time as well, so sometimes its a crapshoot depending on whether they're busy or if the mechanic assigned to your truck is feeling energetic or not.
I don't really have a problem doing locals. Sometimes you get paid more that way than you would actually running for that same amount of time. It's not "the equivalent" of three dollars an hour, its either 10 or 12, which sure, isn't much, but it isn't THAT bad either. I always get paid hourly from the moment I arrive to my empty call and my DM usually rounds up pretty liberally. Again just like anything else YMMV.
