    Hello!

I am a researcher participating in a project where we are trying to model, among other things, the door-to-door transit time of intermodal freight services.
Since we really don't have data on these type of services we have to rely on what has been written in academic publications or on the opinion of people that work in the industry.

If you had to come up with transfer time values (hours) at intermodal terminals, what would you say?

I will give an example to illustrate.
My model should say that, on average, from Los Angeles to Chicago a container will take,
    1. From the origin to the starting intermodal rail terminal= 1 hr
    2. Transfer from truck to rail= 3 hrs
    3. From starting terminal to ending terminal= 85 hrs
    4. Transfer from rail to truck= 3 hrs
    5. From rail terminal to receiver destination= 1 hr
    6 TOTAL = 93 hrs

I am assuming that truckers have a good idea on what values should be used for points 2 and 4. Since this is a very rough analysis, we are thinking in terms of average values.
You probably have a better idea of how things really work, so I would appreciate your opinion.
    Thanks!

If I am understanding you correctly, you want to know how long it takes for the container to go from the truck to rail and rail to truck? If so, that time is not predictable. We drop the box and chassis then leave the railyard. They load it later in the day.
