I’ve been leasing a new truck since 2019. The carrier I work for is based out of Iowa, I reside in Florida. I’ve been told to simply go to my tax collector and ask for a title transfer. I’ve called numerous times, and they tell me I must pay the taxes on it, and then it needs new tags. I’ve advised them that I still work for the company. They have their own authority and I pay insurance and permits thru them. They said new tags have to be put!! It’s the law, yet the company I work for says, no the tags stay. What should I do? I know this is something that owner ops do all the time, but Florida never heard of this, well my county in Florida never has. Also is there an exemption as I reside in Florida, but 95% of the time I’m all over the country. The reason I’m asking is because they want to charge me 7.5% sales tax on $66,000. That’s anlot of money considering they didn’t do nothing to deserve it. I only go to Florida a few days every few months. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.
Transfering title from one state to another keeping original tags

Wait, you live in Florida, but you LEASE a truck?
Is this a lease purchase?
The plates from the company?
Why does the title have to be transferred to your state?Rideandrepair, Big Road Skateboard and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
I only know Illinois law, but here rolling stock is exempt from sales tax. I can't imagine that Florida would charge when Illinois doesn't. If you're leased to a motor carrier and run under their plate, the title is irrelevant except for proof that it was titled at the time the IRP plate was issued unless there is a transfer of ownership, ie the leasor has changed, but that's not likely even if you were leasing the truck from a leasing company. If you were LP from your carrier, that's a nope too. I LPed my trailer and the plates stayed the same even though I titled it in my company's name and in a different state than the carrier had their title.

Just run your carrier's plates. No need to change the title at all. If your carrier doesn't know how to add a truck to their IRP/IFTA accounts then I would run away from them.

You don't need new tags. Tell them it's an IRP tag. Counties don't handle them. Is the title in your name already or was this a l/p deal? You will be liable for sales tax in FL if the title isn't in your name already.

Only time you need to retitle a truck iirc is when you buy it or you move and want the title in your home state. Both my rigs are titled in SD but i have KS plates on them. Never been an issue. If the dudes your talking to cant figure out how to plate a leased on rig....when that is about as basic as basic gets....methinks you should exit stage right asap.

The rolling stock sales tax exemption isn’t affected by running out of State. Just go to DMV with the title, make sure it’s clear without any liens. That may include a signature on the title, or a release of lien letter from whoever financed the Truck.Don’t mention the existing plate. It’s irrelevant. The company you’re leased to will make sure you’re legal. They’ll plate your Truck in Iowa under their name. Hopefully they have a plate program, allowing you to pay as you go. Either way, it if you quit. It’s theirs. They’ can transfer it to any Truck they want. That’s up to them. If you were running under your own authority, based in Florida that would be different. You’re just transferring a Title not buying a plate.
