i have talked to my recruiter today and they have me set up to drive to atlanta. then they will have a shuttle(a company van that we will drive) to scottsburg for orien. which i think is better because grayhound will take 24 hours when we can do it in about 8 - 12 hours. so far so good will post again with more info.

    Hey Mate
Thanks for the insite to this company, I have just finished Truck school (NTI Bangor Maine awsome) and now have my Class A, I do have a pre Hire with werner ??? looks good but you know not too sure,

I like very much what you have said how you are treated and how the training is applied so am thinking well maybe this could be a better one to look into, Training , saftey, equipment, and how i am treated are more important than the cash (sure we ned the cash but some times its not evry thing).

I also love driving, made a life long dream come true so far, Am a English Transplant here in the usa , so learning to re-drive on the wrong side (right) of the road and also shifting on the opposit side (right side) and the Gear positions (IE: first where 4th gear is in UK trucks) took some getting used to since i have drove "stick" back home for 35 years (yes an old git here 53).

So was fun and chalenging at times but man i love driving those trucks not easy but awsome so keep up with the info mate looking good eh
    God Luck and keep safe

Just wanted to give you local guys a heads up. I just got my first job out of CDL school. I got a job with Con-Way Freight out of Eagan, MN. They are located right next to UPS on Dodd road and share the same entrance driver. This Eagan terminal is one of the smaller ones with about 40 drivers. The work I will be doing is LTL. You run girl trucks around town with 28' pup trailers out back. If you are running line haul you will be running twin pups.

I feel blessed to have a local job right out of school. I get to avoid all the headaches of being over the road with a young family at home. I was super nervous when they ask for your 10 year driving record, criminal, and housing. I don't have a criminal record, and my driving record was pretty bad when I was younger. I am 26 years old, so they looked back all the way to when I was 16 years old. Luckily, I have only had 2 tickets in the last 36 months, but over the course of 10 years there was probably 12-15 violations on my MVR.

With that being said I will tell you what I know. For the LTL local driving they start at $18.75/hr and you max out at $23.65/hr (until raises are given). They start paying overtime after 8 hours for the day, not after 40 for the week (which helps!). They will typically work you 55-60 hours per week which, if you do the math with overtime, would be about $65,000 your first year. If you are doing line haul they pay $.48/mile and when you make a stop, fuel up, or are at the companies place of business they pay your $18.75 hourly. Their line haul drivers make around ~$80,000+/yr.

For the other benefits they pay for health, dental, and vision. They have a 401k plan, which when you start, they contribute 100% up to 3% of your pay and then give you 3% of company stock which is added to your portfolio. They also are reimbursing me for getting my HazMat and other endorsements.

I am super excited for this job. What's also nice is that it isn't 100% driving. You get to drive, work the dock, do fork lift operations, clean the trucks, etc. Enough to keep you busy and let the hours fly by and make top pay for the industry.

If you guys are interested I know they have the Eagan terminal as well as a terminal in Fridley too. The Fridley terminal can't hire enough drivers to keep up with demand for business! Now is the time if you are looking for a local job.

    Take care all!

    John

Hey Small Block...Good on you brother. Glad everything worked out for you.

If I'm not mistaken though, I think this is the Transport America thead, not the Con-Way recruiting thread. I would actually like to get input from TA drivers or drivers interested in TA. If I wanted to drive local, I would get a local job.

    Good luck to you.

I would like to hear how the TA teams are running !! How many days they have you out and how many home? I know I have been told celadon is a good company, but when it comes right down to it, if we trusted what these companies promise we wouldn't be writting about the way the drivers are treated. I think that some of the dispatchers should be put in a truck and the driver they messed over should be dispatching them !! Let's see how they like having 3 days for a 500 mile run (team) and then run into solos with 3000 miles for the week. Let them try that for a few months and still make a living for the family !!
