My company wants me to transport 500 gallon skid tanks to and from job sites on a flatbed under 26000 lbs, some of these tanks are diesel and some are gasoline. there will be residue to several gallons of fuel in them

Question: Am I required to have a CDL with hazmat to do this?

    Are the tanks themselves placarded?

Good question. Under 26k doesn't require it. But that hazmat (or not) puts a different spin on things.

I always thought the rule was anything under 1000 pounds didnt require placards. Anything 1001 pounds or more it had to be pacarded. I have never hauled hazmat so i have no idea if this is true or not

For the most part yes. Some exemptions are out there though. Like I know full sized fuel trucks have to be placarded even empty. Thats because of the fumes, they can still explode.
It requires a washout ticket to run without placards.
I just dont know if that's all tanks, or over a specific size.

My suggestion for the op is to call or stop at a scale house and ask.

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

If the tanks have residue then placarding is required, particularly if there is still fuel in them .If placarded, the driver must have the hazmat endorsement.
If you have the tanks cleaned and a certification of such you are good to go.

The tanks are over 119 gallons thus they require placards and you would need a hazmat endorsement.

    Bwbibb and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

...and don't forget the tanker endorsement, too, if you're hauling more than 1 of them and they aren't empty. 119 gallon individual capacity and 1000 gallon total capacity triggers the requirement...so a single tank you'd be fine without...but add a 2nd or 3rd and you'd better have the tank endorsement. If the tanks are empty (or just residual contents), you'd be OK without the endorsement...but partially filled and you'll need it.

They are HazMat until washed out. Must be placarded. Must have HazMat endorsement.

    Bwbibb Thanks this.
