Thanks Jugg, I'll look at them.
So lets see what I found last night.
I removed about a 1/4 mile of wire that was just useless and not hooked to anything, it's just old lights and stuff. And yes, some of it was hooked to power source and open on the other end. I removed enough air line to run the length of the truck twice, not sure what this was for. I left the air lines in place for the PTO switch, the PTO was taken off but I figure if I ever want to run one the switch is there and it's plumbed, just a matter of bolting it to the trans.
The truck has a bit of an air leak that I couldn't find in the truck, I had originally figured it was all the push connctors in the dash. After about a half hour sitting it would be down to about 40 pounds. Turns out it;s the diaphragm in the air shift on the back of the trans. It has a slow leak out the exhaust port, easy enough to fix.
I found out why my speedo was peged. It actually read my trip as about 9k miles, it was clicking off a mile every 4 seconds or so (talk about tripple digit truck!!!! lol Well he told me he had just put a new sensor in it so I went and looked and the guy just taped it up to another wire with electrical tape and it was all oily of course. the tape let lose and the wire sensor wire as laying across the driveshaft. once again easy fix
The tach desn't work because the sensor is in the side box..... don't ask. easy enough too
Hmm. what else..... oh ya the pass side fuel tank was shut off. I turned the valve on and fuel started leaking from the valve handle. With as tight as I was on fuel money bringing that truck home I am sure glad I never put fuel in that side, I would have been real P.O.'d THis truck being an old mechanical it draws an returns to the drivers side then has a crossover just to level the tanks.
So with removing all the junk wire I didn't even get to fix anything yet other than some dash lights. I still have to find the direct short in the fuel gauge. when I try to check the left tank every light in the truck dims, the right side doesn't work either and it gets old sticking the tank all the time.
There are wires cut all over inside the dash and new wires ran, I really need to get a manual with a good wiring schematic so I can look up the wire numbers. there are only two interior lights in the truck that work, one in front and one in the bunk, both are the eyeball lights. I haven't even looked to see if t just needs bulbs or if it is more wiring problems.

I don't think I will need it. I made great headway on it today. Many of the wires were removed from switches for whatever reason and oter wires put in to hotwire different things. Luckily I have the wiring diagram book for the 359 petes. Handy thing to have and I'd never of been able to do this otherwise. I heard somewhere that this book runs like a grand from peterbilt now, not sure though My father bought it new in 1984 or therabouts and it was over $100 then.
So now I have to remove all the hacked hotwires from the markers and tail lights because now I have power to the proper wires again. It was crazy, there was wires for the spot lights hooked up to the fan clutch, wires for the power feed for the engine brake was wired to one of the two cylender outputs for the engine brake which obviously made it not work so they then hotwired a power wire to the power input of the cylender selector switch which made the jakes work but bypassed the foot and clutch pedal switchs, wires for coolant shutdown hooked to accessorie switches etc etc etc. Talk about mind numbing.
But I think I have al headlights, markers and dash lights working once I get the jumpers to the outside lights removed. I rewired the speedometer sensor, havn't driven it but it should work.
So Imade some headway. I still have brake valve issues to deal with yet. -
sounds like it could have been a electrical fire waiting to happen... best of luck

Oh it was, and I was scarred driving it. I was scared enough that I wouldn't idle it while I was sleeping and it wasn't very warm(and I had no blanket)
There was hot wires just hanging everywhere in the dash and under the truck too. There was a wire that turned out to be back up lights that had an inch of wire striped bare and laying on the frame. there was hot leads in the dash that when I opened up the dash panel they arced across the dash and triped the circuit breakers.
Even with all the work I've done I am still going to go buy a battery disconnect switch and install it.
The wife got paid tody so I'm off to NAPA to spend her money! -
I bought a 99 KW from a friend who was in some trouble financially just to help him out. Figured that I would just use it for short haul and local stuff. Well....come to find out, it is a wiring mess of mass proportion as well. So my question is; You want a job rewiring this P.O.S.?lol...I'm only half kidding. My mechanic said he was just completely re-wire the whole truck but estimated the costs to be close to what I paid for the darn truck, or for comparison; close to what it would cost to rebuild a motor. I told him thanks, but no thanks. I'll either use it is an expensive planter for some flowers at the shop or I'll ebay it. Anyways Medman, I guess my point is; "Better you than me".

I'v got my hands full with this one but I'll tell ya what. My dad lives just south of Atlanta. He's 10 times more competant than I am in these things and he's dying for some work. He has COPD so he can't drive anymore and having nothing to do is killing him. SO if you want I can ask him if he wants to do it. You just can't be in a big hurry because he can only work for a bit then he needs to get back to his oxygen. some days he isn't up to doing much. If you are interested PM me

I din't do much yesterday since it was wet and cold out and its hard enough to get anything one while watching my 4 year old boy, I can't do anything if he can't run around outside while I work.
I did manage to get the old sos pads out and started to clean up the headlights and mirrior brackets. This truck has the dual round headlights that are popular now. I saw a set on ebay for like $400!! personally I like the large single round headlight better but only the old style with the marker light that sits on the top of it and stick up not the new style with that litttle surved light over the bulb. ANyways, the truck is pretty rough and there isn't a whle lot I can o to make it pretty other than a new paint job. Although a good polish job wouldn't hurt a bit.
I got my dash buttoned up. Tracked down all the original wires and got them back where they belonged and pulled out all the jumpers they had running everywhere to replace them. It's like someone pulled out all the wires and forgot how to put them back together so they just started wireing jumepers to make everything work. too bad they were an idiot. I got everything back and the only issue have now is that with the headlight and marker light switches on everything works, when I turn the markers off and leave the headlights on I have ONE marker light that is on....... now mabey I'm brain fried from reading these tiny little wiring schematics but I just can't see how one marker can be lit up without the others since they are all connected. ANYONE?? care to offer a guess?
I still have to rewire the markers and turn signals on the fenders, mabey I'll find something there. I still have the brake lights hot wired off the pig tail lead too. I have to look into that yet. -
medicineman:
congratulations and also my condolences...
I personally just wouldn't have it in me anymore for the old girl.
I've played with old cars most of my life for fun and profit on occasion. It's always been a labor of love/hobby, so as a young guy, I never minded the endless hours of work it took to bring an old beasty back to life.
We had an antique tow truck (49 gmc coe 750 holmes) we ran when I was a young man. It was work getting it in shape to be legal, road-worthy, safe, and looking good. It was almost as much work trying to keep it that way also.
We kept it going a good ten years before the frame-off was in need of another restoration. Instead we did a cosmetic job and retired it to promotional use.
The replacement gmc was $50k at the time, but it was worth every penny in convenience and dependability.
Just couldn't do it again for a commercial application... but my hat is off to you... get it back on the road and after a paint job you'll be the envy of the highways from alot of guys with no clue just how much work you've put into it.
btw... that one marker light that comes on with the headlights???
get used to it... lol every old rig has one, you can re wire or even clip the wire off and 6 months later it will come on with the headlights again... lol -
I know howmuch work it will be to keep itup. Which is why I say I'll probably only run it a year. But I guarantee it will be worth more when I'm done with it than it is now. Baically I couldn't loose for the price. It's worth that much at the scrap metal yard as long as I don't put too much into it before it blows up. If I want to take the time to strip it down it's worth alot more parted out.
The cost of upkeep is also why I'm still not sure if I want to put it on the road running a regional area or if I will put it on local hauling chips or logs etc. I hate to do that though as it will tear up the truck.
I do classic cars and jeeps too. And I love old trucks. But it gets old sometimes. In reality I haven't spent much time on this truck so far. If I hadn't been watching my 4 year old at the same time I could have done it all in one day with mabey 6 hr's work.
I'v spent no money yet either, I had everything I've done to it so far. But I will be buying two brke hoses and a dash air supply valve if not a tractor protection valve. Then I still need tires. then it will be legal..... hopefully
