Ok so what I get out of this so far... I travel to Texas to go look at a truck I'm interested in. I decide to buy the truck so first thing is to get bobtail ins. Then take title to texas DMV and get temp tags. Make sure there's no DOT or MC numbers on truck and put up a sign that says "not for hire" on side. Then drive home to Connecticut.
Transporting an out of state used truck purchase?

Dont you have commercial auto insurance already? Honestly, I have never not had a commercial auto policy in place in almost 20 years. I dont know how hard it is to start a policy when you are not at the agents office to sign the paperwork. Then call your insurance agent, they will tell you how to handle the insurance side of it. Call the place that you want to buy from and see if they can issue temp tags. If they do not, call the TX DMV and ask what the procedure is.

Generally, a temp tag means the fees are paid, even if it's for 72 hrs or a week or whatever. Trucks can be registered in other jurisdictions without the truck ever setting foot in the registered state. I'm pretty sure it requires an inspection with a police agency involved. My last truck was registered in In. and it never even got close. I see trailers coming up from Tijuana all the time (brand new Hyundais) with Maine plates. The big obstacle I see is, does any state recognize another state's "temp" while you travel thru ?

Ok, I live in MD. I was financing a truck from G.B., WI. I was leasing on to a company in TN. I got my ins in my home state. Flew to WI. They (dealer} gave me a 1 week temp tag. No dot, ifta or any other stuff because I WASN'T under a load. You don't need any thing but ins and a copy of title or a authorization/ release form, from person you are financing from, stating that you are authorized to drive the vehicle.
