I've got a new Freightliner that I bought in NY and I want a company in PA to build and install the body. I've tried to put the cart before the horse and register the truck before the body goes on, but as you know, I can't.
So now I'm faced with how to get my truck to PA for the body install and back home without a registration.
My Freightliner dealer won't give me a dealer plate because he says there are legal implications when traveling out of state with dealer plates.
I seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. I can have the body shipped to NY and installed but as with most things, it all comes down to the money. And its going to cost me a bunch more to do it this way.
Do I have any other options?
Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Call your local DOT or scale house, they'll let you know what you need. I would go to them as they are the ones pulling you over.
-
Is this a Freightliner Dealer he should be able to give you a transfer tag or sticker as long as you have you insurance and cab card
-
I can sure see why he won't let you use one of his "dealer" plates. There could be all kinds of problems there.
As was mentioned, you should be able to get some type of temporary operating or in-transit permit, as long as you have proof of insurance. -
Yeah just get a 30 day temp. It's a piece a paper you slap in the window.
Any paper will do, lol.
I was late getting my plates on my truck. I drove around 3 months before I got them. Not one scale house stopped me over no plates. -
Thanks for the response. I appreciate it.
I did find a transport company that is affiliated with the Body Company, they offered a transport plate if I can add a rider on my insurance policy to cover the trip under their plate.
Hope that works. I'm a bit peeved at my Dealer for not being more proactive in helping with this. I kinda expected the help from them on this.
I've told them so. -
i googled it and came up with the NY DOT site... sez you need an 'in transit' temporary permit... only good for 30 days.

Your other option is to contact a 'transporter' company to move the truck for you.
I drove for one years ago, and that is what they do. Move new or used trucks across country to their new owners or other locations. -
The reason the Freightliner dealer does not want the use of their plate is quite simple.
1. It is not their truck.
2. You are not their driver.
3. You are not under their insurance.
You have an accident and they are then responsible.
