What is a D-Ring by the way? There I a lot of terminology that I'm finding out I don't know :)

Oh out of curiosity with the ending of your response, are you left or right hand dominant?

That's a J hook. Here is a D hook but there are many variations.

Maybe someone on here does the fancy catapult method. I couldn't ever figure that one out. But it saves your wrists and shoulders... for me I just throw it over but use the whole arm instead of just my wrist.

Another one, showing the tight sling aspect with a little laughing prior to the demonstration basically showing why you want to do the technique. :)

Reroll the strap so that the hook is inside the roll instead of outside.

When you throw it your throwing the hook over. Extra weight to throw.

If it's not windy though. You shouldn't have any problems throwing high and over. Just stand back a few feet and let er fly.

Twist the strap a full turn when hooking to trailer so your not flapping around even if the strap gets slightly loose and needs snugged back down.

The only time you really need rope is throwing your chains over a load of crushed cars. Too much weight to be throwing over that high.

A lot of us have never needed or used something special to throw a strap unless it was windy.

Curious. Is that how the “Flying J” truckstop chain got its name? Named after a tool like that?

    Ouch.
Position trailer sideways following the wind in the direction of a throw. Problem solved.

Easiest is to throw standing sideways to the trailer over the shoulder with a stretched arm.
About excess there was a reply, roll them up with a one+/- foot hole inside and squeeze them under loaded strap getting the flattened "coil" tied up with the load. Prevents the "working" part of strap from chaffing on edge as well.

PS: best way to roll them I've come up with is by hands, 4-6 inch hole to squeeze both hands' fingers in and roll them. That hole makes them to be flexible and squeezable to pack/store and to hold when throwing.

My boss said throwing chains is all about technique according to him :) Haven't had to use chains yet, so I don't really know.

Oh twist the strap....is that the whole thing when they say some drivers keep them flat and other twist....some say it's because the noise from the vibration and others say it causes them to become loose??
