You will probably be a bit surprised when you read this, after I've talked about how wonderful TriPacs are, but I've got one small problem with mine, believe it or not. I have had it for about six months now, and its tripped five times with the engine fault code. It's a no-start failure, because when it tries to start, it cranks a couple of times, coughs a little and then dies. I push the reset switch, and then it cranks right up. Then it'll do it again about a month later. Even the mechanics at the company shop don't know exactly why it does that occasionally. Do any of you know what could be causing this, and if there is any way to fix it? It's on a company truck, so I doubt very seriously that they would ever agree to taking it to TK and having it looked at. But I've just got to say, TriPac is still by far the best APU around!

Has the inline fuel filter ever been changed?. Also could be a weak electric lift pump, just before apu starts there is a warning buzzer that goes off, listen closely and you will hear the electric pump for about a second before starter engages. Willing to bet the unit hasn't been serviced properly and inline fuel filter hasn't been changed?. As it can be a pain in the rear. It is located in behind the air filter. Unless it's been relocated by someone. I moved mine for easier access.

I had a similar problem with my first one, it was a grounding issue. I ran extra ground cables between the unit block and the TriPac chassis frame, and between the chassis frame and the truck frame and negative post on the batteries. The unit relies on the ground from where it bolts to the frame rails, and that area can get corrosion into it.
But the fuel screen on the back of the unit is also often neglected. -
I also had a similar issue. The only that trips that breaker on that box, is when that circuit grounds. That is caused by the oil pressure sender indicating low oil pressure or the temp sender indicating high water temp. I was having trouble with my breaker tripping at random times. Thermo king replaced both of the senders and the problem was still there.
I got tired of them trying to diagnose an intermittent problem. So I disconnected the wire from both senders, and the problem continued. Next I ran a new wire from the breaker to the temp sender then to the oil sender. Problem solved.
Some where that wire had an intermittent ground. I could never find where it would ground out, so the new wire is still on the unit. System works as it should, engine is protected from low oil pressure and high water temp.
I'm upset that Thermo King just thru parts at it and never diagnosed it. Sometimes those $100 dollar an hour shops aren't worth a @#$%. -
Well, you mentioned the filters: the shop just serviced it a couple of weeks ago, but I wasn't in there to see exactly what they did to it. Also, where the unit is grounded to the trucks frame doesn't have any corrosion that I can see. I don't know why it would have any anyway, because this truck is less than a year old. As for wiring, I've never been much on messing around with that kind of stuff. Probably if I tried to mess with that, I'd probably shut it down permanently, or else it might just blow itself apart.

I had a similar issue but noticed it always acted up at higher altitudes.. turned out there is actually a fix for this..
-
Mine does it no matter what altitude I'm at. I know that atmospheric pressure variations can sometimes mess stuff up, but that doesn't seem to matter with ours.

have you ever had or operated any other apu besides a tri-pac? I prefer moine with its 6500 watt generator and alternator and serate heat and air unit . -
I had two Carriers a few years ago, and they were fairly good, but didn't do as good as TriPac. The Carrier did ok at keeping you warm, but if it went anywhere near 90 or above, you would sit and sweat and pant up in the top bunk. One thing about Carrier though, I have to admit, I never had an engine no-start. Other APUs I've heard too much bad about them, and plus they are all really, really loud compared to the TriPacs
