Hey guys
I am looking at a truck to buy but want to make sure that I have enough clearance between the truck and trailer and that I am well under 75ft combination truck and trailer length. the details are below. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Step Deck Trailer measurements
- From the kingpin to the support braces under the upperdeck is 60"
- 9ft upperdeck
-Overall length 52ft
Here is my truck's current setup
-truck and trailer total length = 69'6"
this is a single axle truck
-Kingpin to end of the truck's frame is 53" ( I need to double check)
-Kingpin to end of the mudflap bracket is 57-58" ( I just remeasured)
-From the truck's frame to the support braces for/under the upperdeck is 7"
-From the mudflap straight back to the support braces for / under the upperdeck is 28"
-The truck I am looking to buy is a freightliner Columbia tandem rear axle with a 247" wheel base.
The total length of the truck is 28'7"
Right now it has a stationary wheel but if I buy it I would need an airslide
-Right now from the Kingpin to end of the truck's frame is 72"
-From the kingpin to the outside edge of the mudflap bracket is 84"
the truck is in North Dakota so unfortunately I cant go hook up the dang thing and see if everything has enough clearance.
The questions are:
1. How far back do I need to move the 5th wheel in order to have enough clearance between the truck's frame and the support braces under the upperdeck?
2. How much clearance will this give me between the truck's frame and support braces?
3. How much clearance will this give between the truck's mudflaps and support braces under the upperdeck?
4. What will my overall truck and trailer length be?
thanks,
Andrew

I'm not a step-deck or flatbed guy so I won't be much help...but 247 wheelbase? Seems pretty long to me!
-
check .kingpin to front of trailer. to check wheel base measure center of front wheel to center of rear tandems(between rear axles)
-
WOW, that's short to me. My KW I owned was 280" and my Pete I owned was 270".....
Never had a prob with overall length, but then I was never going to Canada. -
Kingpin to front of trailer is 18"
Kingpin to support braces under the upperdeck= 60" -
I don't see why that woulden't work. my old trailer had a 36in king pin setting.my wheel base is 240.

how long was your upperdeck?

You will probably be pushing the overall length with that short front deck, I doubt you could hook it up without moving the 5th wheel back. Not every tractor can be hooked to every trailer. It may work if remove you the mudflaps.
You have to remember you have quite a bit ahead of the front wheels with a Columbia or any other set back front axle.
I pull 48 foot spreads with a longer front deck and a shorter wheelbase tractor; when I was using the Western Star 244" set back axle pulling those it was approaching 73 feet overall. The short deck trailers we have and will get back soon to use had a shallower kingpin setting which lengthens the rig more.Last edited: Oct 4, 2009

I would have to move the 5th wheel back 19" to give me the same clearance between the truck and trailer that I have right now with my current truck.
Which will give me a diagonal distance from the truck's kingpin to the mudflap of 65"
With my current truck the diagonal distance from the truck's Kingpin to the Mudflap is
about 58" ( I remeasured it)
Right now with my truck their is a 28" of clearance between the mudflap and the support brace.
so with the 5th wheel moved back 19" the KingPin to Mud Flap is 65" so my new clearance from the mudflap to the support brace is 21"
Does that sound right?
When you truck is turned at 90 degrees do you lose some of that 21" of clearance or does it stay the same no matter if the truck is straight or at a 90 degree angle?
thanks,
Andrew -
Your mudflaps will be closer even if you move it back the 19 inches, I can't tell you if it will be too close to turn. The rear of the tractor makes an arc, the closest clearance will be at 40 to 60 degrees (maybe 30 to 60). If you get it hooked, start the turn and check the clearance as you start the turn, it will tighten up pretty fast.
If you are close with what you have now, it will be closer with that.Stroked F550 Thanks this.
