True. But that isn't the point I'm trying to make.
The driver is the captain of the ship. If your boat sinks regardless of the reasons it's your ***.
I just can't stand some of the people who couldn't operate anything bigger than a lawn mower that get into a management position and all of a sudden their word is law. I'm gonna do it this way or the highway type deal.
Not trying to be argent towards anyone or what they want done. I'll listen with an open mind. Hey it might be better than what I was thinking. But if I flat out don't like the plan it's not happening.
The last guy hauled it that way doesn't cut it.
Even as a company man if your outfit doesn't trust your judgement on things like this it's time to find one that will.
My thinking is I own the truck, trailer and the name on the door. I show up on time with the proper equipment and experience for the job at hand. And act professional towards "My Customer". It's my name/saftey rating/liability/cargo insurance that will take the hit over any incidents.
So in other words my *** is on the line a whole lot more than anyone else.
Treat me like a idiot that needs his hand held "this way or the highway" and you can find yourself another truck.
I will find myself another customer.

Last year, i saw a tanker, bore a clean cut hole through the headache rack. And landed on the drivers seat. 40 miles south of home in the interstate.

It's not illegal to be without a rack. But i think the only protection they can provide. Is rebar. Anything else is just a no go.

Means a tanker trailer broke from the 5th wheel and slammed right through the rack and cab and landed on the drivers seat.

snowwy.....I like ya and all but your story here,Boy oh Boy,
So a big smooth bore tanker Broke loose with brute force and decided to gently stop after putting a "perfect" hole into the truck and delicately stopping right on top of the drivers seat, No damage to the Dashboard or nothing.

A wise man once told me:"you know those very big signs Big compagnies put at their entrance, with those slogans like SAFETY FIRST?Well they forgot to write the rest.Should Be safety first AS LONG AS IT DOESN'T COST THE COMPAGNY MONEY."
He ment that those compagnies don't want to pay For trucking firms to buy equipement that is safer but less versatile as that would raise freightprices.

I have no idea on the dashboard. all I can say is what I saw as I was flying by at 70 mph. the truck was mostly on the off ramp shutting down only that portion of 5 lanes.

Darwin and Mr Murphy are cusins. Mess with one, and you might get sucker punched from the rear by the other. I think if I were the MFG of steel, I would have created some kind of device to keep this from happening. Unfortunately, I'd be willing to bet the law suits haven't gotten back to the steel MFGs, otherwise if it did, they would have created something to help prevent this type of accident from happening.

Straps on steel is stupid. Edge protection is a 100% must. if the steel slidies 1 bit, the straps will be cut and not to mention, straps will stretch somewhat. Chain is much better, but, steel on steel is asking for slippage. Now, how about a rubber coated steel edge protector for chains. (They do exist, I have some) Sounds like a much better solution. The other solution that will possibly help is to simply secure each layer of the load and not just the upper layer. I see too many times drivers get lazy and throw a few straps over the top of the load so the load looks like it is DOT secured..

Regarding the driver slamming on is brakes, what the article should have stated is, the driver of the truck had to abruptly hit is brakes to avoid hittiing someone who cut him off. Driver don't just hit their brakes for no reasons.

    Audiomaker and misterG Thank this.

I thought slamming on your brakes is how we are suppose to test our securement?
