Hi all, my name is Joe. I am a college student and i am working on a big project for a research/stats class of mine. I've always really been interested in trucking (my dad and granddad both drove so i grew up around trucks) and thought it would be neat to get some insight from real truckers for this report, so hopefully you guys can help me out -- I figure this is one of the best places I can get info from! i am trying to get information on some truck driver favorites and what truck drivers do and don't like about the job/industry. i really hope im not being offensive or intruding here asking these questions but if you guys could fill out this brief survey for my class (you can just copy and paste it in a reply) it would really help me out

1) How old were you when you knew you wanted to be a truck driver?
I never wanted to be a truck driver. Well wait, I should take that back. I wanted to be a truck driver when I was a kid, say ages 7 to about 11. Then I got over it. When I actually became a driver, it had nothing to do with childhood aspirations. It was purely supply and demand driven. I was coming from a a career field (airplane pilot) where there were far more job applicants, than there were jobs. And I was looking for a field where the ratio of jobs to job applicants was better and one which had relatively low barriers to entry (i.e. not a lot of expensive training required, at least as compared to professional flying). Trucking was the first thing I found that did all that.
2) What made you want to be a truck driver?
See above.
3) Have you always been in trucking or did you work other jobs before? If so, what jobs?
See above.
4) How did you get your cdl?
Took out a loan and did a 6-week CDL program at a local trucking school.
5) What's the best/your favorite part about being a truck driver?
Its an easy job for the money.
6) What's th e best truck stop chain?
Dunno. I've always run local so I don't spend a lot of time at truck stops.
7) What state has the best/most accomodating truck stops?
See #6.
8 ) What's the most exciting state to drive through?
They're all the same to me but I run local.
9) What's the most BORING state to drive through?
See #8.
10) What truck stop/fast food restaurant has the best coffee?
Dunno. I don't drink coffee ever.
11) What do you snack on while driving?
Varies. Lately its been pizza flavored Combos.
12) What's your favorite fast food place to stop for food at?
I usually pack a lunch from home.
13) How do you exercise on the road?

No idea what you're asking here.
15) What do you like to listen to (if anything) while driving?
Podcasts, audiobooks, Sirius Radio, Pandora & my own mp3 library.

I run local, mon-fri w/weekends off. I do the same things in my downtime as pretty much everyone else who works a 5 day/week job.
17) What is your biggest cost on the road? Food, tolls, etc
Company pays fuel & tolls. I pack a lunch. So my out of pocket costs are more or less zero usually.
18 ) What is your primary method of keeping in touch with friends/family on the road? Phone, texting, Skype, etc
Phone if at all.
19) What is the hardest part about being a truck driver?
The first 2 years.

Solo (except when I'm training a new hire). I've driven team, I prefer solo.
24) How many miles have you driven in your career?
No idea. I'm paid by the hour so I don't really keep track of miles.
25) And finally....what's your favorite place you've ever delivered to?
No favorite place I can think of. Its just a job to me I guess.

8 ) What's the most exciting state to drive through?
Arizona is gorgeous, east TN too.

Phone, Facebook
19) What is the hardest part about being a truck driver?
