Now that everyone here understands the qualifications for trucking (and training), would you say it is UNETHICAL for a truck driving school to teach their student's on ONLY 28-foot trailers and 6-speed transmissions?

(Note: Most midwest states don't deal with this issue as most schools at least provide the minimum; however, NewYork, Texas and California have a different story to tell)

    Your thoughts please...

it does teach you the basic concept, so you will understand the dynamics of an articulating vehicle and standard transmission.

    So, unethical ? no.

there are some that teach you on a 1 ton pick-up with a gooseneck or bumper trailer that classify as a Class A vehicle due to weight ratings.

Not only schools, but mega carriers who make a driver with 6 months experience a trainer, or a trainer in the bunk while the student drives, that's an accident waiting to happen and every company that does that should have their authority yanked and put out of business.

I think it's unethical. They should be trained in the same kind of equipment they're gonna operate when they get a job. Using a pup trailer is kind of "cheating" by making sure everyone passes the class.

People pay big bucks to take those classes. By not teaching them with a 53 footer, they are getting ripped off. They're not getting the skills they're paying to learn.

Ethics. I saw the pick up and gooseneck guys try to pass the drivers test. The trailer had all the wood stripped off and the driver could look out the back window and through the trailer. They had a real hard time backing. They ran over lots of cones. The cost was only $300. They get a license and then what? They still have to pass a road test with a company. I don't think it is a question or ethics.

I think it is a question of National Security. I am retired Air Force now (along with many other things). I flew. I still fly. On 9/11 the attack was carried out by people who had taken flight lesson. The were not interested in learning how to land a plane. They were only interested in learning how to take off and point a plane at a building. What possible reason would someone want to get a CDL without knowing how to drive a big rig. It would seem to me that the Timothy McVay's of the world would want to just get a license.

I will point out one exception to my above view. I was hired to drive a 48' flatbed day cab, delivering roofing supplies. There was a guy there who had driven all his life. Raised on a farm. I was only temporary. The guy had a CDL B but not the A. One day they had me run him out to the course to show him the test for an A. He ran the course with no problem. He could have taken the $300 course and I would have had no problem with it.

Interesting thoughts guys. Thank you. I would say its important to get the training in equipment that you will drive in the industry, and although, some may benefit from the quick "cheating" way of getting a Class A, I think it still is wrong that schools use little pup trailers and 6-speeds just to say "they did their job and got you the Class A."

I would have rather had a short trailer and a a truck with no power steering to teach backing... lol
