Ill be hauling pneumatic tanker doubles 100-129,000, cements and sands mostly out west, some midwest and south west, lots of rocky mountian areas.

Ill be going 2003 or older:
Engine 475 hp enough? Or should go to 550hp

    cat 3406e,or C-15 ?

    Cummins isx or n-14 ???

    Tran 13 spd, 15 spd or 18 spd ???

    What rears do i need?
I would like 3:36 rears hard to find, but 3:55s seem the norm!

My 2003 T-600 475hp 3:58 rears and 13 speed, cummins ISX gets 5.5 to 6.8 mpg, right now here in the rock springs wy area, thats 100 mi loaded and back 100 miles empty, with a single pn tanker hauling 30,000 to 52,000lbs of cement or sand, one way and empty back, and thats at 70mph.

But im not sure this combo will work western states/ rocky mountians with doubles at 100-129,000 ?

Ive driven a lot of 525 and 550hp cats, they seem to lug better than my ISX and shift a hell of a lot better but fuel sucks in most of them like 4-5 mpg.

    Thanks,

The question I have is are you gonna be running doubles all the time or just every once in a while? Areyou gonna be in and out of places that you will need a low gear to get going?

The thing is if your gonna be running interstates that the speed is 70 and you want to run it then you will want something that you can do that and get good mpg.

I would suggest talking with some others who do this and ask what their setup is and how they like it.

If you go 2003 and older look for a C16 600hp, 18 speed and 3.70 gears for the kinda weight you will haul, 3.36 with 129k and rocky mountains DO NOT MIX!

The 525hp is a bridge and will suck fuel, the 550hp 6NZ single turbo will do fine as well. I say go for the 600 CAT get a fuel temp wire and some trim codes put in the ecm for 100hp more and dont look back. I averaged 6.2mpg on a 4200 mile west coast trip running heavy both ways with my 1021hp C15 with a very heavy foot.

Maybe you can find 1 with the Cat transmission brake, that would also be helpful pulling that heavy load in the mountains.

I have to disagree Martin,I have had a brakesaver in the last two trucks I have had.
I have a C-16 and the brakesaver turned up to 65psi with the jakes its putting out about 850hp of hold back and never leaked oil.
Brakesaver own its own about 420hp good in town (no noise) I would love a nice W900 with a C-16 if I lived over there.
