Here's how it works for me.

On the rare occasion I take a grocery/midnight delivery load, I check in, dock and hope they take at least 6 hours to get to me. You know, I need some sleep and am hoping for an additional 4 hours of detention pay while I sleep.

So, I jump in bed,10 minutes into a sound sleep, the van starts rocking, 20 minutes later it's the office folks calling me with, "come get your paperwork now and leave the premises."

The worst situation is when they detain for 4-6 hours - too short for a decent detention amount, too long to wait for the sleeper 8.

Budweiser In Fairfield is 30 miles from my house, and I've gotten to know the guards. I call ahead before I leave and they tell me if the load is ready or not. It's rare that I have to wait more than a couple hours there. Of course I did get stuck there 6 hours last month because their scale broke down after I was loaded, but I was getting well paid for detention so I didn't mind it much. Their loads are paying too much now to not be willing to put up with some down time. Safeway in Tracy is a total cluster-F as are most of the Safeway DC's.

Same here and that is exactly why I don't touch any of them, except Walmart. I have had exceptionally good luck with Walmart. Never more than 3 and usually no more than 2. The 4 letter word for me DC wise is Meijer. Never again. SMH. Never again.

Reason for edit: fixed a mess I made of the OP's quote.

...I thought I was busy before.

Then one of my colleagues went out sick, and the other took his vacation.

    Cruuuuuud.

    Ouch. Hang in there!

I've decided to hang it up for the rest of the month, going back to work on Monday.
