In addition, your story reminds me of that article I linked to over a year ago from Freight Waves: "Where's My Freight?" That carrier discovered just how little loyalty there really is in this business when it comes to these shippers as well.

Spent yesterday with one of my sons. He likes to dabble in car buying & flipping on his days off from his regular job, and asked me to go with him to check out some prospects in the metro area.
I have to say, this boy has quite the talent when it comes to buying and selling. He struck a couple of deals that will easily clear him 3k. I went with him Saturday before last an hour from home. He bought this beautiful BMW 328xi from this kid. He flipped it 2 weeks later and made $1,900.
It's great to be able to spend time with him. Which goes right along with why I appreciate where I'm at in my life and business these days. It affords me the time to do so. If I were chasing loads all over tarnation, it just wouldn't be possible.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.Last edited: Dec 30, 2020

There is the answer loyalty is a pipe dream. When things flip the other way your loyalty is going to be to your drivers. That’s the way it has to be.

Loyalty is almost non-existent among shippers. About the only time you have loyalty is when the carrier is related to the shipper by blood or marriage, or if the carrier covers a special niche that larger carriers aren't willing to deal with. I have a small group of clients in that second category that supplement my income, but not enough of them to make a killing in this business. I find that in more cases than not, receivers are the ones arranging the shipping, and they prefer playing the odds on the spot market. Yes it means that occasionally a load won't get covered, but in the long run they feel like they're saving money, and in many cases they are over contract freight.

Nah, there is lots of loyalty out there, but loyalty doesn't over rule good business. What loyalty will give you is the first right of refusal, a heads up that someone is fishing for your business, or a mulligan if you muck something up. Sometimes it will let you average revenue out. All invaluable things. Loyalty does not cover being over priced for the market or under performing.

But there are a lot of big businesses who are more than happy to allow others to over perform on their behalf at under market compensation

Ok if loyalty doesn’t override good business what is it’s value? Right of first refusal isn’t that just the chance to match today’s new low rate? I contend that there is no real loyalty because rules of business doesn’t allow for it a level of comfort might be reached with time but long term you still must earn it.

I believed in loyalty too but after 4 years of spot market I haven't found it. A few times, after repetitive loads and some courteous phone call exchanges I might have hoped for the one to become but ... it is live by the spot market and die by the spot market.
Remember all that prostitution analogy, from the first issue of this thread?
Just like a prostitute cannot really hope to marry her nicest client and for that matter vice versa, neither can a solo owner operator hope for a long lasting love with a direct client, be it a shipper or even a broker.
I hope to be wrong but I say what I see.Truckermania, Dale thompson and DUNE-T Thank this. -
As a one man dog and pony show who derives the bulk of my revenue off the spot market, I have personally never offered or expected to receive loyalty in exchange for my service.
I contract one load at a time for a mutually acceptable price and expect to be paid. That's it. I don't have the capacity or wish to commit (verbally or contractually) to any repeat business.
Doesn't mean that at times the same brokers don't call me back, or that I don't call them back, because that happens all the time. But I'm not hitching my wagon to anyone for a hosts of reasons. The main one being that I don't want to commit to something that I can't fulfill.Lostkeys, Truckermania, Dale thompson and 1 other person Thank this.
