Did I say cheap? I said lower, which doesn't equate to cheap. Didn't have a conversation about retention as just 5 weeks earlier when picking up his new truck he was happy. I've been around this industry long enough to know how the driver churn goes and it's just the nature of the beast.

72 cpm in a new truck + benefits, what not to like?
Maybe he got too little home time...

It makes me think that there is still quite a disconnect between the rates and the driver's pay. I saw a scene the other day when a Muslim from Africa, in his traditional buba style outfit was all in joys after given a truck for what must have been his first trip. He actually pulled out his prayer rug to say prayers before taking off.

Pretty exotic view... I swear, I could not bring myself not to like that happy man, even though one might feel insecure that he might be a cheap labor on a work visa, perhaps a solution to the drivers' shortage.

Dude, you come from a mud hut in BF Africa to a condo Cascadia with 24/7 A/C, you would definitely think you landed in heaven.
    We're spoiled.

. Lower = cheaper if you believe that it’s just the nature of the beast then the cycle will continue.

It must be the case. I haven't watched the National Geographic channel for a while but I don't think it changed a lot - not only they escape their everlasting political turmoil but also misery.

I don't think so. He told me when he wanted to get home and leave out. Very rarely gone for more than 2 weeks at a time and no northeast or overnight runs. He's been trucking his whole life and just think he got tired of the daily reefer grind. It happens.

Regarding Canadian Carriers...I suspect that thanks to NAFTA , US inbound or outbound freight justifies the existence of more than a half of their trucking industry. Is it not enough?!
The country with the entire population of 38 million which is less than California alone, and the inferior highway systems should thank the United States of America for NAFTA agreement and perhaps not to abuse it out of common decency, if nothing else.

Most of their mileage must be done in the States. Had there been no NAFTA and their transport limited to the border zone, all that freight would be in the hands of US based carriers.
So seeing them stealing our domestic freight is not exactly the kind of gratitude one would expect.

Makes no sense. So if I buy a bottle of Ranch dressing at Wal Mart for $4.00 as opposed to buying it at Kroger for $5.00 that makes the bottle from Wal Mart cheap and inferior because it's lower priced? Ultimately the market will dictate pricing/wages based on supply and demand.

Cross border trucking has existed since before NAFTA. The guy I used to drive for pulling flatbed got his start driving back in the 70’s running produce from CA up to Calgary and Edmonton.

It seems like there would be a way to hold brokers accountable when they book a carrier for a load within the US (or Canada for our trucks). You’re supposed to be knowledgeable of the rules and regulations when you get your authority.
