Truck Load Rates Halt 8 Week Slide 2.0

Nice.i have efs too, but barely get any discounts... Must be because i only have one truck? Not sure how all that stuff works

 

Our discounts used to be not great. But last spring they negotiated a volume deal with PFJ and turned the cards off everywhere else (except KT) to make sure we buy enough.

My old trailers been pretty good. It’s an 08. Bought it almost 6 yrs ago from Penske for $11k. It was used as an auto parts shuttle in Ft Wayne. Only had 238k miles on it. Probably close to 700k now. I’ve patched the floor, and still has a couple pretty bad gouges in it. Also has 7 patches on the roof, none of them leak. I’ve replaced all the air lines, brake chambers and ABS main and sensor wires. Lately the parking brake valve is sticking, I’ve had to crawl under and tap it till it quits leaking air. Then left rear air bag starts leaking from the base, and bags wont inflate. I’ve had to push in on the bag to stop the seepage, till it starts inflating. Needless to say, I plan on replacing all the air valves, air bags, and shocks asap. I’d like to just trade up to a newer Trailer now. Too much uncertainty and high prices though. Whatever I buy, it’ll be the best deal under $30k. Not investing any more than I can quickly get out of, if needed.

If you are paying pump price that sucks. Northeast with TCS card is seeing a $1 plus off. $4.61 the other night on the island $5.71 pump price.

 

In my opinion you probably won’t have to hold out much longer to trade into a newer trailer. When I sold my truck in January I listed it on Truckpaper, so now I get all their emails. When things were hot it was maybe one per month. Now it’s multiple per week and about 1/3 are dealing with trailers. So stuff is coming available, people are starting to sit on inventory now it seems.

 

I remember the time - a year ago - when you were contemplating about selling your new at the time purchase vs the used truck. I expressed my dislike to the speculatory motives of selling the new - never used - equipment for the sheer desire to profit. It was not directed individually at you but at the general trend at the time. I still uphold that dislike with 100% conviction that my sentiments were the only possible to stay on the noble side of things.
You decided to sell the used truck, and I think that it was a perfect timing for had you waited a few months longer, you would have not had that opportunity.
You seem quite content about your new truck, bought for the pre-inflationary price that's unattainable today, so that's an additional dividend of the decision - if may call it this way.
I am glad that doing the right thing on the moral side proved to be correct also in terms of finances.

 

I’ve been thinking about this since I read it yesterday. Money is money, and I don’t draw a distinction of where it comes from. Yes, I could’ve made a nice chunk of money by selling the new truck when it came in. But it wasn’t speculation. I didn’t order the truck hoping that prices would go up and I could sell it for a profit.

My old truck back in the normal times probably would’ve been a $55k or so used truck. But I ended up selling a truck with 600k miles on it for only $18k less than I paid for it 3 years prior, and the money in my pocket was nearly the same as it would’ve been had I sold the new truck. I don’t see how one move is any more noble than the other when it comes down to high equipment prices. One could argue that someone buying my new truck for $40k more than I paid for it would be better off than the guy who bought my used truck for nearly $40k more than it should’ve been worth.
