I’m in the process of lettering my truck. Got the name, DOT number etc. My question is about the placement of the truck number. As in 01, or 23 etc. Is there a regulation that says where I need to place that? I can’t seem to find one. Most people I understand put them on the side of the hood, I was wondering if that’s a rule I have to follow.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks

You don't have to display that number at all. The only things you have to display is company name, and USDOT number.

Unless if you haul into Canada then I believe it’s a requirement. I seen a guy getting yelled at for that (not having it) in New Brunswick one day.

I'm also pretty sure you have to display VIN if you're based out of CO. But barring specific situations like that, 99.99% of the time, you just need company name and USDOT.

I thought a “unit” # was required. Along with Name and USDOT#. Nothing else.

Thanks. I was thinking that, I just wanted to make sure. I’ve searched around and can’t find anything about having a visible truck number. I’m trying to keep lettering to a minimum lol

I know it’s required for registration purposes, but I can’t find where it’s required to display on the truck…

That’s probably where I got the idea. Sounds about right. Trailer doesn’t need a number. Probably same for Truck. I have the minimum, name, USDOT# and unit #. That’s all. I’ve heard “ fire extinguisher inside” is a requirement. Maybe. I’ve had them measure the size of my numbers in Ohio. They were 1/2” over minimum. I see some Big Megas with tiny Lettering. But Noooo, I get harassed.

Haha yup….mine are 2” exactly…but I sure have seen many companies with much smaller lettering. They like to harass the little guys I guess. I’ll put the unit # on if I have to but for now I’m waiting till DOT says otherwise…

The fire extinguisher thing is if you have it mounted in a box . You need that signage on the box…….
If it’s mounted next to drivers seat you don’t need it
