From my experience with dump trucks and haul trucks I can only imagine the troubles you encounter with moist product freezing to the trailer. Surley that is an issue?

    Yes, it is.
I can tell you from first hand experience that salt will freeze. Loaded off an outdoor pile (wet) at Port Wilmington going to western PA. I had salt froze to the floor and up in the nose. That was the closest I've come to side dumping.

Salt can be nasty stuff. It can clump up and hang in one corner of the nose and over you go. We discovered that the hard way.
We also tried hauling it in pneumatics and that was a total disaster.

    Yes sir.
Up where I live it doesn't pay the greatest either. Risk versus reward just isn't worth it, IMO.

Would a side dumper be better for the moist salt ?

Probably be safer if temps are sub zero.

6A353559-2AC9-4DFE-9AF9-53A52C481142.jpeg The 379 in that picture my folks bought new. 89 model 50th Anniversary edition. 4 an a quarter 15 over and 3.36’s on tall 24’s. I bought it and the 39ft Mate end dump it was hooked to from them in 99. Even got the driver with it. One Step had been with them since I could remember. It occurred to on the first payday his name wasn’t One Step and I had no idea who to make the check out too. At any rate wasn’t 30 days after I bought it he turned it over with a load of salt. Ground gave out underneath him. After a sleeper, cab roof and corner #10 was good to go again. One Step truly hated it. You could tell he felt real guilt. Asked me several times if that was gonna put us outta business. I just told him no just gets you a new paint job you best decide what you want. You woulda thought it was a million bucks I give him when we got it done. We just straightened the trailer with a hoe and a dozer. Put a new cylinder on it and continued on. That did push me toward the hopper bottoms in all seriousness. Still got them both. I wish One Step was still around too. He truly understood the equipment makes his paycheck philosophy. That he needed us as bad as we needed him. You’d never been around a more comical guy. He was sorta simple and a lot tongue tied, far from dumb though. Idk why talking about a load of salt made me think of all that
