Guess I shouldn't have posted anything regarding salt.
Ended up reloading salt at Port Wilmington, Delaware going back up to NYS.

Not much to add here, I’ve been doing the same loop for the last 6 weeks. NE to IN and back a couple times a week.

I was going thru a bunch of dad’s old pics last weekend and came across this one. This was a guy from home. He’d pull this combo down to Mitchell SD where he’d unhook from the tank and take the hopper to Spencer SD to load rock. Then he’d load his tank at the rack in Mitchell. He’d hook everything up and head back to Murdo where he’d dump the fuel at the 66 station and the rock would go to the concrete plant. It was probably a pretty decent trip back in the era of regulated trucking. Crazy to think about how long Herb and my dad have been gone now.

Stupid question time. When you say regulated trucking, what were the big differences from today besides HOS

Operating authority was specific to lanes and type of freight. I’m not familiar with how the federal stuff was but for South Dakota there were maps from the Public Utilities Commission with mileages between towns and there were rate sheets with what you could charge for different commodities.

The guy in the pic, for example, probably didn’t have authority to haul anything going east to get to the rock that he could haul back. So instead of deadheading just for a load of rock he’d double up what he was allowed to haul with this combo.

Back in the day my dad had a grain dealers license so he could buy wheat and then he’d sell it close to wherever he needed to be for his load back.

I have copies of old letters the PUC would send out to everyone when someone applied for operating authority. Then the existing trucking companies would request a hearing where they’d all say the new authority wasn’t needed because the area had adequate coverage. It was way different back then. South Dakota intrastate stuff was regulated until the mid 90’s or so. I remember when dad passed away the phone was ringing as soon as word got out. Mom sold the South Dakota authority for a little over $15k.

It's shaping up to be a messy weekend in the northeast.
    Be careful out there.
