I am considering a new career in trucking. Have been a industial flooring contractor for 25yrs and closed shop 10/1/11.
Any recommendations regarding a school?? I live outside of Oakland Ca. Looking for a regional job eventually, after getting some experiance and learning the ropes. Any advice would be apprieciated.

    Thanks,East Bay Al

Well, you probably won't like my answer ... Fox Valley Technical College, Appleton, WI. Yup it's a long way from you.

I don't think you're likely to consider it, but let me tell you a bit about it:
10-week, 40 hour week course. You drive many different tractors and transmissions, (I drove 8, 9, 10, 13 they also had a 15 and 'super 10' but I didn't get an opportunity to) 48, 53, tankers, flatbeds and doubles. (no tankers in the winter tho) All backing situations, including live docks,; comprehensive training on log books too. Target for students is at least 1,000 miles, with perhaps 75% in city. Also night driving training, SKID PAD training (few offer that)! If you arrive in winter, well, you get to drive in snow and ice too :biggrin_25523: coupling trailers is a new adventure in winter! LOL

Anyway, I'm glad I went there! My employer normally checks school transcripts, when I told them where I got my CDL they said "no need, we know it's a good school." says a lot, right there.

Community colleges often have excellent programs. Often times they have a dislocated workers center on site that can get a government grant to cover tuition. A much better option than going through a company for training. You are not obligated to work for any specific company for any period of time. It opens up a lot more options.

Good point! ALSO... many trucking companies that hire 'trainee's offer a tuition reimbursement of some type. Best to check before time, some have time limits "if hired within 30 days of graduation" for example.

i just finished the ffe school , very good school ---the only thing you have to pay for is your liscence $70 its 2 weeks in school and 6 weeks with a trainor the time with the trainor you get paid 455 a week -- they dont take anything out of your pay (tuition) but there is a 1 year commitment --- they hire out of cal and have a terminal in la and stockton --- there is regional available and they also do ltl out of both those terminals

Yep. And what many do is pay you an extra $X per month up to a certain amount. Most times there is no time commitment with this type of reimbursement. If you leave then the money stops............

What is your driving situation now. Are you OTR or regional? In your opinion, does FFE look like a long term
    opportunity.

East Bay (San Francisco Bay Area)....thanks for the heads up though. Will be checking out local truck schools as well.
Wife works for local community college, but they don't offer truck training. Go figure???

    Thanks for your input.
