I took my test with a single screw 1984 LN9000 Ford and a pup trailer. Any driver worth his salt can learn the rest of whatever he needs to know on the job. The ones that can’t or don’t just aren’t cut out for this and they’re usually the ones taking this job as some sort of last resort.

I owned a printing company once upon a time. A girl I had in my art department had a CDL because her family had horses. She tested in a pickup with a horse trailer...

While one can, and if that's all they need it's fine. This is a bad idea for general testing. Too many restrictions limit the CDL to really only pulling ag trailers.
To name some. : No air brakes, No 5th wheel, and possibility no manual transmission.

I should have prefaced this by saying it was 40 years ago lol.

And no, Im not saying she could have jumped in a cabover and tooled on down the road. Just saying, at least in them days, it didnt take much to get one.

When I moved to Oklahoma in '82, the tag agent accidently gave me a Commercial Chauffeurs license instead of a regular license. I never had to do a driving test in a truck.

Should've just told them to do advanced calculus in their heads.

That seems difficult to you? Never had a student take more than 20 mins to get proficient in it and most got it in 10-15.
